‘Improve Your Writing’ Programme' July, 2010, by Pre Primary and Pre School

During the Summer Vacation, transcription work was given as homework, connected with the Jataka Tales which they had already done before the holidays. A sample copy of the different letters and patterns were given to all the children, so that they could follow the same. The response was quite good. Children visibly made an effort to write neatly, with correct formations, although they still have a way to go.

As a follow-up programme, a class-wise competition has been organized at all levels, till class X. The 20 best entries from each class will be showcased on the 30 July, 2010 and the best entries, class-wise, will be sent for an ‘All India Handwriting Competition’, organized by All India Citizens Development Centre, Aurangabad.

I Decide I will Not

SAY “NO” TO DRUGS by Dr. Shakuntala Dawesar, School Counsellor

Dr. Shakuntala Dawesar qualified from The Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and trained at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. She has been in the practice of Family Medicine and Counseling for the past three and a half decades.

She was awarded The National Science Talent Scholarship in 1966 in the year in which it was instituted. She Received The Scroll of Honour for Outstanding Contribution to the Community and the Medical Profession from the South Delhi Branch of the Delhi Medical Association in 1989 and again in the year 2008. In 1995 she was recognized for her tremendous contribution to the Polio Immunization Programme in the city. In 1991, she pioneered the formation of the world’s first All Women’s Rotary Club and in 1995 led a Rotary Group Study Exchange Team to North Carolina, USA, where over a period of four weeks she delivered over 50 public lectures on various subjects.
For many years, Dr. Shakuntala Dawesar wrote a weekly column for the Hindustan Times entitled “ Help Mate “ and later “ Talk it over “ in which she addressed the medical, emotional and social queries of the readers.

Medicines are also called drugs. They are generally prepared by extraction from plants or through chemical compounds in the laboratory. The study of drugs is called Pharmacology and this branch of Science deals with the effects of a drug on the human body. This effect is the basis of treatment of symptoms and diseases. Every drug has many effects and side effects and should only be taken under the supervision of a prescribing medical practitioner.

Some substances and drugs have an effect on the mind and mood of an individual. They create abnormal sensations in the body and alter the mental state of the person and are taken for non curative purposes. These are commonly referred to as “drugs” and are extremely harmful as they possess the characteristic of causing dependence or craving. A person who takes such drugs without medical indication is termed a drug abuser and anyone who abuses drugs, becomes a drug addict. Drug addiction destroys the mental and physical health of a person.

Every youth must have knowledge about the harmful effects of drugs and their highly addicting nature. They make the user a slave who loses all control over his own mind and body. NEVER submit to any offer to “try it just once “ You have control over your choice to take a drug but once you take it, the drug controls your mind and your behaviour. It is a frightening thought. Every single person who has abused drugs has regretted it. Drugs have harmful effects on all parts of the body. From heart disease to cancer, they cause many ailments and they slowly destroy one’s health and well being. They bring sorrow to the person who uses them and to those in the family. Eventually, a drug user is shunned by all and suffers his agonies alone. The nicotine in cigarettes and the alcohol in drinks, are also addictive substances and should be avoided.

The horrors of drug addiction cannot be imagined. My earnest plea to all adolescents is to steer clear of this menace. Everyone must understand fully the seriousness of trying out even once any addictive substance, starting with cigarette. Peer pressure in such matters is an absurd reason for consent to try it out. If, indeed, there is such peer pressure then an adolescent must know it is time to change one’s company and move on.

The human being is one of the greatest marvels on this earth. Let us preserve our minds and our bodies by leading healthy lives with a balanced diet, adequate exercise and a purposeful existence. Knowledge gives us the power to make wise choices and be in control of our lives. Use this power to surge ahead and realize your goals. Say NO to drugs.

I Decide - I Will Not Take Drugs

Drug addiction is really self-destructive. This self-destruction may take some time but it is a sure death, as 'Drugs bring misery and ruin'. This addiction is very much prevalent among the youth especially those studying in professional colleges, like engineering and medical institutions.
Sometimes, they take a puff of a cigarette having marijuana and brown sugar just for some 'relief'. This 'relief' is for freedom from boredom, they think so but soon they become its victim and from here starts the life of self-destruction. 'Drugs may thrill, but they only kill'.

You may find those addicted to drugs beginning at bus stands, railway stations or even before religious places, but before it, they have used all sources for getting money to buy these drugs. For example, they sell their books and acquire the habit of theft. In fact, they have exhausted all avenues of getting money to buy this killer. They reach a stage where they can't live without taking a shot. If this is not possible they undergo horrible pain in the body. They are so desperate and addicted to take one shot that they even sell the costliest item. As it is a fact that 'It is very easy to get in and impossible to get out'.

The addiction makes physical wreck. They get many deadly diseases. They now live only for these deadly drugs. 'Break drugs before drugs break you'. Nothing matters to them except the means of how to get money and buy drugs. What was first fun is now a death trap for them. So 'Shun drugs for yourself before they shun you'. As someone rightly said ' It is better to go home than a nursing home'.

Recently it was in the news that the Samsung heiress was caught red-handed with 1500 kg of coke.

People who indulge in drugs and are really addicted to it getting to know its pros and cons, they try avoiding it. Avoiding drugs is really impossible as the lust for drugs never dies. So they are sent rehabilitation centers where they are made to accommodate and fit into a drug free environment, far away from the cities to overcome their lust for drugs and they are made to start a new life in a different way and they are made to love life. But it is very rare that people in rehabs survive because more than 90 percent of such people commit suicide, as it is really difficult for them to leave drugs. As you know 'Bad habits die hard'. Thus I decide that I will never take drugs.

Interaction of Classes XI and XII with Professor Amit Sachdeva, SRCC.

The School organized an interactive session for classes XI and XII with Professor Amit Sachdeva of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University on 20 July, 2010. He teaches Economics and has written several books on the subject for both graduate and postgraduate students.

Students were on one hand deeply impressed by his candid admission of mistakes committed in his school days and on other hand filled with admiration for his achievements in his academic/ professional life. He described how he'd used, as it were, his mistakes to learn anew, how, to travel to Excellence. A gold medalist from SRCC, he advised the students to set targets and then persist hard and single-mindedly. To develop a thirst to dribble to the top. He said he believes the B Com Hons course is more advisable compared to the BBA. Also that it is imperative that every child follows his best inclination rather than just the popular preferances like law/ chartered accountancy. He informed that SRCC offers placement help comparable to the IIMs.

INTACH NATURAL HERITAGE POSTER MAKING COMPETITION

Meghlayana Banerjee of VIII A, spreading the mandate of INTACH for the preservation of our heritage, participated and won the First prize in the Natural Heritage Poster making Competition. Meghlayana’s poster will be featured in the INTACH calendar for 2011.

Her poster depicted a formidable tiger set against a lush green forest with the tragedy of imminent extinction conveyed with the use of a newspaper cutout of the tiger. The message was cold and clear. Protect and preserve, else the Tiger, will live only in the news.

UKIERI exchange programme to London

20 June – 27 June for the year 2010.

UKIERI is a five year programme which aims to substantially improve educational links between India and the UK so that in the long term we can become partners in education .The partnership formed under the initiative has some key principles.

Making learning fun
Engaging with technology
Creating professional teaching resources
Sharing learning resources and
Connecting with the outside world.

This year our school management chose me to represent our school for the UKIERI educational programme to London. I was humbled to hear about my selections and suddenly felt extremely responsible. With a little apprehension which was put to rest by our esteemed Chairperson, Dr. Nayana Goradia and our Principal Ms. Manleen Ahluwalia, I was patiently assisted at every step especially when we faced a problem with our visas which we received at 5.15pm the evening before! I was accompanied by Kriti Dang of class 9B.

The programme Co-coordinator ( London) was Mr.Dan Lyndon, a senior History teacher at Fortismere School.The trip was scheduled from 20 June to 26 June 2010.The team from India included six students and the following teachers –

Ms. Shefalee Gupta - The Banyan Tree
Ms. Kiran Banwait - Modern School,Vasant Vihar
Ms. Aditi Mehta - Jaspal Kaur School

We left for London on the morning of 20 June and landed in the evening at 6.30 as per London timing. We reached our family apartment 152 Hoppers Road via tube. Our itinerary was as follows.

Monday June 21

P1 - Welcome, introduction and tour of Fortismere School. We were shown around Fortismere School, it's huge campus with various specialized departments. The tennis court, the exhaustive art department and a wonderfully appointed library were impressive.

P2 - Meeting with the coordinators of UKIERI at Fortismere to have a discussion about our projects followed by pupil shadowing from periods 3 to 5. The day ended with a little reception in the library where one of our Indian students, Mansi from Gyanbharti gave a spellbinding Bharatnatyam performance.

Tuesday June 22

P1 - A project planning meeting was organized to discuss the various projects initiated by the participating schools and their progress. We also discussed several proposed projects for collaboration with the teachers at Fortismere.

P2 - We were given a time- table and we proceeded to observe Lessons. I went to observe English lessons ( 7-11 years), a creative writing class and a class on Shakespearean times as an introduction to Macbeth. It was a lovely learning experience. The atmosphere in the class was unrestricted. However ,like in every school there were some students who were uninterested despite the teacher’s effort. Another observation was the free use of internet as a teaching aid, each class having a smart board which made teaching interactive and fun.

In the evening we were taken to the Pea** Theatre to watch-‘Insane In the Brain ‘.It was a dance –drama, brilliantly executed.

Wednesday June 23

P1-P2- All day visit to Chestnut Primary School

The day at the Chestnut was well spent. We observed a school with mixed ethnicities, races and diverse cultural-social backgrounds. We observed a a lesson plan, toured the school, interacted with students and teachers, sat through a story-telling session and noticed that their teaching was theme oriented, all subjects were woven around that theme, the theme for the week being Dinosaurs! Mention worthy was the room specially designed for children with special needs with a specially trained staff to assist, record and assess their development.

Thursday June 24

Mr. Dan took us all for a day out! The students and the teachers were taken on a guided tour to – Tower of London and The London Eye. In the evening we were invited for an informal dinner by Mr. Aiden, Principal, Fortismere School .

Friday June 25

P1- Meeting with student council, Fortismere School. Our students gave presentations to the students / teachers. Our Kriti Dang recited the poem –Sailing to Byzantium after a brief introduction about the theme of the year at our School, namely, The Silk Route. Her performance got her accolades from the audience.

P2 - Project planning meeting

P3/ P4 -Training and action plan: We were taught how to use and upload information on a specially created page on the School’s website for further dissemination of ideas.

P5 - Reflection meeting to discuss how things went as an outcome of our five day exchange. There was a farewell reception after school and we took the opportunity to eat out together that evening. My memories of these shall remain mine vividly.

Saturday June 26

Departure.

I had a very fruitful learning experience and I would like to thank my gracious Chairpersons, Mr. and Mrs.Goradia for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I went as a student and have realized that I shall always be one for there is always so much to learn…I shall always remain a student so that I make a good teacher.

A TRIP TO LONDON (UNDER UKIERI)

I remember the day when Principal Ma’am called me to her room and informed me that I was the lucky one chosen to represent The Indian School in London under the UKIERI exchange programme. Initially I was not able to believe my ears as this was a very wonderful opportunity for me. I was excited but on the other hand I was nervous too!

I was selected on the basis of my overall performance including my academic results, my interest in co-curricular activities and my behaviour.
My parents allowed me to be a part of this exchange programme and soon my passport was ready. I met Ms.Shivanshi Pathak, the teacher from my School, who was escorting me. A cluster of six schools of Delhi were a part of this educational exchange programme and from each school one student accompanied by a teacher were chosen to represent their school. All of us as a group soon applied for the VISA but we had to struggle for it till the last day.

Our group of 12 boarded the plane on 20 June, 2010 at around 1:30p.m. It was quite a comfortable and safe journey of about 9 hours. At London airport we went along with Mr. Dan Lyndon, who was in charge of this programme, and escorted all the students to their respective host families. The teachers were also taken to their respective apartments.
I was staying with Molly Purcell, a student of the Fortismere School, which was our host school. Molly’s parents and her elder sister were gracious hosts. Molly’s house was situated in Muswell Hill,Tetherdown.

On Monday morning, Molly and I walked to Fortismere, where all the Indian students and teachers were welcomed and introduced to the teachers and the Head of the school, Mr.Aydin Onach. Then some students took us on a tour around the school. The school was quite big comprising of separate rooms for all subjects, a huge play ground, badminton, basketball and tennis courts, a well stocked library and a canteen. After this tour of the school we attended lessons along with the students we were staying with. By attending Molly’s lessons I got to know their educational system and their way of learning. In the afternoon there was a dance performance by Manasi of Gayn Bharti School. After school, in the evening I spent some time with Molly and her family and went off to bed early.

The next day, I attended Molly’s lessons in the morning at school and went around Muswell Hill with her after school. In the evening our group of students and teachers along with Mr. Dan went to the Pea** Theatre and enjoyed the amazing and beautifully displayed play ‘Insane in the brain’. I will not be able to forget this play for a long time.

On Wednesday, after attending lessons at school, I went out with Molly’s family around London and saw some famous historical places including Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, Hyde Park and walked along the embankments of the river Thames. I had a great time over there and I captured all the memories in my camera.
The next day, being Thursday, along with my group I went for a walking tour of London. We visited the Tower of London where Mr. Dan enlightened us on the dynamic past of the historical monument. Then we went to the London Eye, a big giant wheel, in which we actually sat and as it went up we got a better view of the city and enjoyed it thoroughly. In the evening, Molly and I went to one of her friend’s house for dinner. At night Molly’s mother took me to the Alexandra Palace from where I got a very good view of the city, as it was situated at a height.

On Friday morning, there were some presentations by the Indian students including me at the Fortismere School. I narrated an extract from the script of ‘Dilli Meri Jaan’ in Hindi which I spoke during the last year’s Annual Day and I also recited the poem ‘Byzantium’ and briefed them about it, linking them with the themes chosen by our school each year and the criteria behind it .

This was followed by a meeting and an interactive session with the Student Council of that school. After meeting the Student Council I joined Molly in her lessons. Amongst all the lessons I attended, Design and Technology was my favourite. In the afternoon we had a farewell reception in which Anubhav , a student of The Banyan Tree School, Delhi conducted a dance workshop for the teachers of Fortismere School. We were all a part of it and had a lot of fun together. In the evening were all invited for a meal by Mr. Lyndon.

Saturday was a day for all of us to meet our friends and family staying in London. Even I met my relatives and went shopping with them. Then I soon packed my bags got ready to leave, though not willingly. We reached the airport around 5:30p.m and our plane took off at 8:45p.m. We had a safe and happy overnight journey and reached to Delhi at 9:45a.m. The trip was unimaginably fantabulous and nothing better could have ever been expected from a student exchange programme.

All of us learned a lot while enjoying ourselves till the very end. Thus, I feel very fortunate to be a part of this UKIERI exchange programme. Thanks to all who went along especially Shivanshi ma’am and my group leader. Last but not the least Principal Ma’am and my teachers for giving me this opportunity to learn more and explore. I am also very grateful to Molly and her family for being so gentle and caring towards me. I will never forget my first and extremely memorable trip abroad, throughout my life.

20 students were chosen from different classes of IX and X for a screening of "THE TRUTH ABOUT TIGERS" by the award winning Director Shekhar Dattatri at the WWF-India Auditorium on 15 July 2010.This movie's main aim was to create consciousness about the condition of tigers today and to bring peoples together to save tigers. They are not only a specie to be protected but also preserve the ecological health of our plant.

Special Assembly on the 150^th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore & Showcasing of ‘The Environment Week’ : Classes I – V

It is the 150^th Birth Anniversary of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, this year. To commemorate the occasion, a Special Assembly was organized today. Students of classes III – V participated in a colourful programme, dotted with songs and dance- item from Tagore’s innumerable collection. Two poems, translated in English, were also recited by students of Class III and Class V. Principal ma’am, Mrs. Ahluwalia, was our guest of honour and spoke on the relevance of Tagore and his woks, even today.

This programme was followed by the showcasing of the Environment Week by students of classes I and II. It was aptly clubbed with Tagore’s programme, as he was a true nature – lover, with a legacy of songs and lyrics written in description of the nature and environment. The little ones came out with beautiful songs and poems based on ‘Water – Our natural Heritage’, which was the theme for the Environment Week.

USIEF Workshop for classes XI and XII, 14 July, 2010

Ms. Renuka Raja Rao, country coordinator of United states Indian Educational Foundation (USIEF) addressed students of classes XI and XII on 14 July 2010. She oriented them about opportunities for education after XII for Indian students in U.S.

In a power point presentation, she highlighted among other things, the appropriate time for applying to colleges, tests like SAT and TOEFL and financial assistance.

Handouts carrying email address of useful websites for gaining information about universities and colleges were distributed among students who were very appreciative of the valuable guidance provided to them.
