Seasons greetings!
Despite several days being lost on account of the thick pollution this term, the children made up with significant strides in diverse disciplines and we can look back happily on what was accomplished these past months.
Girton College ( Cambridge)- The Indian School Essay Competition, 2017.
On 11 December, 2017, we conducted the awards ceremony of the Girton College ( University of Cambridge) -The Indian School Essay Competition, 2017. Held at our School in August, the second edition of competition, the occasion had an overwhelming participation of 50 schools of Delhi- NCR and outside. The awards ceremony was presided over by Dr. Alan Gemmell, Head of the British Council in India and the money prizes were sponsored by the School chairmans Prafull Foundation.
Dr. Amidas Goradia National Inter school Debate
Our annual feature, the multi-format Dr. Amidas Goradia Debate on 23rd August, 2017 is now a coveted event in school level debating circles across the country. This year, the debate was a contest of 45 prominent schools of Delhi- NCR and cities outside. Mr. Soli Sorabjee, formerly Attorney General of India was chief guest on the occasion.
Debating achievements
Our School senior debate team team lifted the Rolling Trophy at the Dhruv Rajgarhia Memorial inter school English Debate at DPS, RK Puram on 25 August17.
Aatif Husain was adjudged Best Speaker in the turncoat round and Avantika Chodha was adjudged Most Promising Speaker at the 5th Llewellyn Quiz and Debate held at Sherwood College, Nainital between 9 and 11 September, 2017.
At the Silver Jubilee Commemorative Young Thinkers Conclave held at Mayo College Girls School, Ajmer during 23-26 August, 2017, our dramatics team comprising Rishabh Bhatia, Simran Narula, Vatsala Banerjee and Avantika Chodha won the award for the Best Page to Stage performance
On 20 November 2017, Avantika Chodha of our School, along with three students from other schools got the prize opportunity to officiate in the UN office as peer educator under the aegis of KidsTake Over, an initiative of the UN on the occasion of World Childrens Day.
Inter-school Competitions
Angad Singh Chugh, of class 9E was selected to represent India in the U-14 (Boys) Futsal World Cup 2017 India to be held in Barcelona from 6 to 11 December, 2017.
At the 16th Delhi State Wushu Championship held on 24th August 2017, Dhananjay Bharadwaj of class 10C won the Gold in the 65kg category and Harshit Pant of class 10D won the Silver in the Above 80kg category.
The Zonal Chess Championship 2017-18 ( Zone-23) was held at our School on 25th August and the finals were held on 30th August, 2017. Our senior boys team emerged winners of the tournament, beating Amity, Pushp Vihar in the finals and our sub junior boys team was declared Second runners up in its category. Our girls team was the first runners up in the sub junior and junior categories.
Chirag Khatri, class VIIIE took the Bronze at the All India Sub Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2017-18, held in Goa between 15 and 19 October, 2017 in the Under 13 -15 years category.
The senior girls team comprising Riya Khatri, Aeshita Sharma and Sharanya Sai (class XI) secured the First position at the zonal badminton tournament held on 18 October, 2017.
Alumni reunion
The annual Alumni Reunion held at School on 29 September, 2017, was a evening lit with diyas and dream memories. Students of classes 10 to 12 and the teachers warmly welcomed our dear alumni back to their alma mater on this luminous evening. A rich carpet like salt rangoli lay rolled out, as it were, from the School gates to the steps in a glowing welcome.
Nostalgia nestled in the fond familiarity of the beloved portals that was once home. And soon the evening, accoutred with the rich hues of swirling mirrored skirts and dupattas matched music as students and teachers delightedly fanned the festivity in step with energetic dandiya beats.
Grand parents at Gandhi Jayanti
As customary, our grandparents were invited to join the students as they sang Bapus favourite hymns on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. It was also an occasion to renew our commitment to our communities with our school Citizenship Programme.
Citizenship Programme initiatives
Spot fixes were undertaken by groups of students at regular intervals this term, including a bus stand near Sapna Cinema and pillars of the Moolchand Flyover.
The Citizenship Programme also proudly launched its own website for comprehensive updates to spread the message amongst students, elders and decision makers.
Self defence for girls and Gender sensitisation for boys by Delhi Police
To arm our girls with self-defence skills, we organised a 10 day self defence training course with the Delhi Police for the girls of classes VI to IX and gender sensitisation for the boys of classes VII and VIII in November, 2017.
Safety committee
A safety committee comprising members of the teaching and non teaching staff, parents and students has been appointed and regularly meets to oversee security arrangements at School.
Video conferences
Numerous exchanges vide video conference, including a global skypathon, dotted the term. Subjects like the universality of human differences, ecology and cyber crime were discussed by groups of students both junior and senior, with their peers and experts in Portugal, the US, Sri Lanka, etc.
Interactive sessions with School Chairman
Lively interactions with our School chairman, Mr. Prafull Goradia on wide ranging topics provide our students with new perspectives on matters of social, political, historical and economic relevance. The children listen, ask, and learn to introspect. Subjects dealt this term were Science and Religion, Cleanliness, Partition, the Uniform Civil Code among others. Mr. Goradia believes that students must be exposed to stretched horizons at an early age to facilitate well rounded personalities.
Eco excursion
331 students accompanied by their teachers spent 28 December, 2017 at the School eco park, away from the urban melee. It was an exercise of ecology, art, citizenship and sustainability as the activities undertaken included creating mini butterfly gardens in discarded car tyres, assembling worm towers in pipes, making rustic toys with twigs, painting on a village wall, playing sports of the soil like gili danda, pitthu, kho kho etc, potting air purifying plants, etc. They even sang folk songs of the area besides enjoying a hot and fresh farm meal of makke ki roti, sarson ka saag, makhani dal, shahi paneer and gajar halwa! The excursion was a unique experience of the freshness of a rural setting, otherwise rarely available to our city raised children.
As the year bows out, we look back in fulfilment at what was achieved. What remained and lots else will unfold as the new year opens, bringing with it new anticipation, excitement, achievement and aspiration. We pray that our paths and those of our dear children and their families are filled with health and happy times.
