11th Dr. Amidas Goradia National Inter-school Debate, (English)-2013.

The 11th Dr. Amidas Goradia National Debate in English was hosted by The Indian School on 12 November, 2013. The debate which is a forum for ignited minds and enthusiastic contest attracted a large number of energetic debaters from 37 prominent schools of Delhi and the rest of India.

Shri Vineet Joshi, Chairman, Central Board of Secondary Education graced the occasion as Chief Guest. He is a change- maker and it is under his leadership that CBSE has taken path- breaking strides. Infact he is deeply involved with the recent wave of school reforms which include initiatives in examination reforms. These include the introduction of the CCE or Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, replacing marks with grades, incorporating school-based assessment and the introduction of the monitoring and mentoring scheme.

The subjects offered at this year's contest were 1) Next world war will be over water. 2) Reel life has reflected real life in the Indian cinema over the last 100 years. 3) The sun will never set on English Language. 4) Vote bank politics is better than growth politics. 5) This house believes that housewives should have fixed pay packets.

The debate commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by our honourable guests followed by the Saraswati Vandana and the Citizenship anthem sung by our school choir.

The panel of judges included luminaries from diverse fields, namely, Ancy James, Senior Producer/ Director, NDTV, Aakash Banerjee, Associate Vice-President - Programming Head at Radio Mirchi, Shantanu Ray Chaudhari, Managing Editor, Harper Collins Publishers and Shreya Roy Chowdhury, Senior Correspondent, The Times of India.

Dr. Nayana Goradia, Vice Chairman of our School welcomed the august gathering and explained the thought and spirit behind the inception of this event. The debate is an attempt to reach out and connect with students across India so that we all share our intellectual capital with each other, she said.

Shri Vineet Joshi addressed the audience and released the School Social Science magazine. He motivated the students and told them not get disheartened if they do not win. He quoted Mary Ann Radmacher who said, Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying, I will try again tomorrow

As the debate commenced, sparks lit and soon furious fires were fanned! Adversaries were enveloped and equally setbacks were submitted to, even as the contest continued to be claimed!

All the teams displayed oratorical skills of an impressive order and the judges had difficulty choosing any one best. In the end, Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan emerged overall winner and took the trophy. Modern School, Barakhamba Road was named runner- up. The Best Interjector prize was taken by Chirag Malkhani of Bombay Scottish School. Best Speaker was Amogh Sood of Don Bosco School.

Siddhanto Sen and Kriti Dang of class 12, offered able competition, but as per tradition at our School, did not run for the prize as we were the hosts!
