Adopt a Monument, Classes 9 -12, March 2012

Adopt a Monument, a CBSE initiative, classes 9-12. Delhi conjures up several and simultaneous images in its architectural relics of bygone times and it is found absolutely imperative to mobilise awareness amongst students about the enduring tapestry of our tangible heritage. Keeping this in mind the CBSE has embarked upon this attempt where schhol srae encouraged to adopt a monument. Students from classes 9-12 were taken for a heritage walk on 27 March, 2012 in the Hauz Khas area to shortlist a monument for adoption. In preparation, a brain-storming session at School refreshed the knowledge of the various monuments in the city and Hauz khas in particular. The purpose and the need to nurture a monument was also explained and thoughts animatedly exchanged. We went to 13 monuments starting with Dadi Poti ka Makbara to Chor Minar .Most of these sites had no available information about who built them. However each monument displays an architectural style and a culture which demands us from a duty to preserve them for posterity. After lengthy interaction, the students arrived at a consensus to adopt Firoz Shah Tughluqs tomb. Soon ASI handed us the monument to care for and conserve. Without doubt we feel honoured that we are have been considered, but we parallely realise that the accompanying accountability is also ample.
