ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2012-13

The Annual Exhibition, enthusiastically attended on 11 August, 2012 focussed on ingraining a scientific and creative attitude in our young students to make them comprehend the interdependence of science, technology and society by a hands- on experience. The exhibition seeks to engage children and teachers to synergise experiences and motivate each other to design and develop something novel. Hundreds of displays dotted several sections of School with participation ranging from classes 1 to 12. Each corridor became a celebration of science as little scientists furiously beckoned visitors to stop by and visit their discoveries.

A special assembly was also conducted on the occasion. Multiple significances namely, Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan and the celebration of the scientific spirit were together offered an auspicious inauguration by Chief Guest Lt.Gen.(Retd.) Prakash Menon, PVSM, AVSM, VSMin the school auditorium. The ceremonial lightning of the lamp was accompanied by the Ganesh Vandana by the School choir . Chairman. Mr.Prafull Goradia addressed the assembly and welcomed the chief guest as Principal ma'am presented him with a customary sapling as a gesture of our lending a hand to greening the environment. In words of inspiration, Lt. Gen. Menon elaborated the essence and value of freedom and appealed to the children to be fearless so as to make a difference.

The annual Awards' Ceremony followed to felicitate the academic achievers of board classes 10 and 12. The students had pursued to prove excellence and were now examples for others. Besides being the pride of their School.

An enchanting sequence of mohiniattam and kalaripattu by middle school reinforced the oneness of our vast land even as both girls and boys, equally tied rakhis on each others' wrists as a symbol of gender equality and universal brotherhood.

The assembly closed with a vote of thanks by Principal Mrs. Narula as parents and guests dispersed to visit the exhibition. Physics Exhibition       Green energy named the theme for the Physics exhibition, several interesting models were displayed at all levels. Wind mills, solar cars, solar boat, solar houses, light-sensitive devices, FM transmitter and Pressure gun etc. Several live activities were also performed by students some of which were the working of the jal-tarang, efficiency and strength of frictional force, pressure exerted by water, atmospheric pressure etc. All the working models and activities were highly appreciated by the visitors as amply received in remarks left behind. .

Chemistry Exhibition     The theme Green energy entailed most of the exhibits being based on harnessing natural resources as potential energy producers . The project on the production of bio-diesel from vegetable oil prepared by a student of class 12 in the lab stole the show. Another model converted CO2 emitted from vehicles, by using a chemical Na2O2 to O2 Another renewable potential source of energy, namely Hydrogen fuel cell was also demonstrated. Exhibits that captured the attention of everyone were the amazing tricks done with dry ice. Parents /Visitors could also calculate their carbon foot prints on a special calculator which they found interesting . Other activities included finding Nickel in chocolates, different types of petrol available in the market , different grades of plastic and their usefulness etc.

Biology Exhibition     The Biology Department took an eco-friendly turn, Starting from bio-plastics to a biogas plant, from non-toxic homemade cleaning solutions to eco-friendly bio- pesticides; it was Go Green all the way. The students demonstrated an innovative way to make plastics from bio-degradable materials like potato, cornstarch and gelatin. Home made non-toxic cleaning solutions were a great success with both parents and students, as curious visitors tried out the window-cleaners, all-purpose cleaners and furniture polishes! The students also gave simple recipes for making eco-friendly pesticides from easily available products like garlic, pepper etc. which can be used in the garden and on indoor plants to ward off pests and insects. Biogas is one of the most promising fuels in this day of depleting resources. Students constructed a bio-gas plant showing how easy it is to produce renewable energy resources.   To showcase the theme of the year, Latin America, the students also demonstrated the process of mummification used by the Incas and Mayans, mummifying apples in the absence of bodies! Report by Ms. Ramya Venkatraman, senior Biology teacher. Mathematics Exhibition     The main focus of the exhibition was the practical application of mathematics, incorporating the theme of Latin America. Primary and middle school displayed mathematical fantasies like Roman number puzzles, Patoli designs, Madhubani paintings, hexagon trees, origami and a diverse range of board games. Visitors also got the opportunity to view toys created with diverse geometrical shapes and models constructed from polygons and folded calendars. Senior school highlighted Mayan architecture in buildings, besides displaying the beauty of optical illusion and spellbinding mathematical tricks. Class 11 explored the application and need for conic sections and also discovered fractals in nature. Everyone was mesmerized by the occurrence of these structures in things observed in everyday life. Visitors were also exposed to the utility of trigonometry in Seismology and tides. Students showcased models displaying how the concept of trigonometry is used to explain the nature of tides and also logarithms to find magnitude of earthquakes.

Social science Exhibition President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela recommended that President Obama read "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent" by Eduardo Galeano. Obama will probably promptly dismiss the proposition! In fact nobody connected with Uncle Sam would dare to read it! Eduardo Galeano in his brilliant text has offered the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation; the veins which he traces through the body of the entire continent, empties into the coffers of wealth in the United States and Europe. On our 66th Independence Day we, at The Indian School recalled the Tryst with Destiny 14-15 August, 1947, in which Pandit Nehru called up on the people to redeem the pledge of serving the larger cause of humanity , to give reality to the dreams of all the nations as the world is knit together. Our exhibition on the occasion of Independance Day was thus aptly titled Lets explore the unexplored Latin America. Latin America is a region of the Americas where Romance languages (i.e., those derived from Latin) particularly Spanish and Portuguese, and variably French are primarily spoken. Every exhibit echoed the title. Christopher Columbus was applauded for discovering the New World but the devastation of indigenous civilization Aztec, Mayas and Incas at the hand of conquistadores was not overlooked . Replicas of 3 of the new seven wonders of the world namely Machu Pichu, Per; The Statue of Christ Redeemer, Brazil; And, Cichn Itz , Mxico were richly displayed . Simultaneously were case studies on how The International Monetary Fund slits the belly of each country to let in the maggots of immoral capitalism! To every Pinochet there were Castro , Che Guevara ,Dilma Rousseff and Michelle Bachelet . The GDP of high-income countries of Latin America, namely, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico and Panama was also discussed at length and above allLatin America which is home to some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. From waterfalls to rainforests, to reefs and erupting volcanoes came alive in the creations by the students chiefly by a beautiful mosaic of maps.

Language Department The languages' department showcased their exhibits in the 4 languages taught at School., namely, Sanskrit, Hindi, French and English. The predominant focus was explring the diverse facets of the School theme, Latin America. Creativity abounded amidst the written work displayed. It came as essays, letters, book and film reviews, travel brochures, games, etc. Dramatisations of well known short stories and mock interviews also occupied the prize space. The Hindi department explored short stories by Munshi Premchand which the students dramatized. Through their projects the students of class 6 traced the journey of Indian Cinema in the last 100 years. Inspired by the School theme, some students of class 9 wrote letters to their friends describing an imaginary journey to a Latin American country. The students of class 10 attempted Latin American film reviews. They also recorded mock interactions with elders in the family which reinforced the value of caring for the aged , besides simultaneously sharpening their skills of articulation. The English department encouraged the children to read about countries like Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador during the summer holidays. Based on their readings, the students prepared colourfultravel brochures and projects. The students of class 11 read the works of Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Octavia Paz and Paulo Coelho and wrote literary critiques on them. They also wrote book reviews on the novelRebeccaand dramatized portions of the novel. The Sanskrit and French departments motivated the children to build their own mini- dictionary in Sanskrit and create games in French.
