'Being Safe Campaign' - A Facebook and IAMAI Initiative
In a nutshell, we are shocked by cybercrime, but also expect to be shocked by it because we expect it to be there, but confusingly we appear to be shocked if we don't find it! - David S. Wall
On 26 December, 2013, Mr. Rakshit Tandon, Advisor/investigation expert to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Uttar Pradesh Police at Agra and the Cyber Crime Cell of Gurgaon, Haryana Police, and Visiting Faculty-Lecturer at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Police Academy - Moradabad (U.P) paid a visit to guide students of classes 7 to 11 on Cyber Crime.
The workshop revolved around the central theme, 'Cyber Threats to Children in the Digital World' and opened our minds to the Safe Surfing Campaign which sensitises about types of cyber crimes, preventive measures to be taken while surfing the internet, the Information Technology Act and remedial measures that can be taken if one is victimised.

Mr. Tandon very effectively conveyed that the internet is a global storehouse for information and offers the biggest library in the world at the fingertips. He told us to use the internet to enhance knowledge and not explode it! He gave us vital e- security tips and internet guidelines for our online activities especially in the social media, of which some of the important ones were -
(1) Not to give identifying information such as name, home address, school name or telephone number in a chat room.
(2) Not to make photographs public.
(3) Not to respond to messages or bulletin board items that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent or threatening.
(4) The most important one is to remember the fact that people online may not be who they seem to be.
The speaker also suggested some measures for parents to use for content-filtering softwares on PCs to protect their children from pornography, gambling, hate speeches, drugs and alcohol. Also, he informed about softwares available for time control on individual and dual users. He provided us with all real-life cases and examples which he had dealt with in the long run.
Accompanying Mr. Tandon, we had a representative from Facebook who discussed the usage of social media in a desirable and beneficial way. He shared a real- life example of a soccer player and his story of perseverance which changed his life in a positive way through social media.
The workshop was followed by an informative brain-storming as students seemed very curious to know all they possibly could on cyber crime. Mr. Tandon answered each one happily!
A memorable cyber session for us!
