CBSE Teacher workshop in Accountancy
The CBSE organised a two-day Capacity-Building Programme in Accountancy for the teachers of classes XI and XII at the P.P. International School, Pitampura, on November 24 and 25, 2023. The workshop was conducted by Mr Naresh Bhardwaj of Mayoor School, Noida and Mr Jagat Mehra, Vice Principal, Lancer’s Convent, Sr. Sec. School, Prashant Vihar Rohini. Around 35 schools of Delhi were represented at the programme. Mr Ramesh Kumar (PGT Commerce) attended the session represented our School.
The participants were divided into groups. The session began with an interesting ice-breaking activity in which a representative from each group was asked to introduce his or her group members, highlighting the common characteristics among them.
The workshop was then carried forward by both the speaker-educators, who focused on teaching methodologies, project work, and overall engagement in the subject.
One of the central elements discussed during the programme was the emphasis on project-based learning in accounting. Educators were encouraged to design projects that not only solidify student understanding of accounting principles but also foster critical thinking and practical application.
The programme addressed many curriculum changes and deleted portions in the Accountancy syllabus in the academic session 23–24. Educators were briefed on the modifications and guided on how to adapt their teaching strategies accordingly. Teachers were thus informed about the content modifications to help them adequately prepare students for the board examinations.
The CBSE Capacity Building Programme underscored the importance of integrating Bloom’s Taxonomy into accounting instruction. Teachers were provided with insights on how to incorporate various cognitive levels—remembering, understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating, and creating—into lesson plans and assessments. This approach aims to promote higher-order thinking skills and a deeper understanding of accounting concepts.
To make the subject more interesting and engaging, educators were introduced to innovative teaching strategies. The use of educational games, videos, and interactive presentations was emphasised. These strategies not only capture student attention but also enhance the comprehension of complex accounting principles. The programme highlighted the importance of adapting teaching methods to the evolving needs and interests of students.
An interesting aspect introduced during the programme was the “Stop-Walk” energiser activity. This activity aims to break the monotony of long sessions, allowing students to refresh their minds and refocus on the subject.
The use of videos as an instructional tool was discussed as a means to cater to diverse learning styles. Educators were encouraged to incorporate relevant videos that complement the curriculum, providing visual representations of accounting concepts and real-world applications. Video presentations offer an additional layer of understanding and appeal to the audio-visual learning preferences of many students.
The educators discussed major highlights in the subject of Accountancy. This included emerging trends in the field, updates on industry standards, and the importance of aligning the curriculum with the dynamic nature of the accounting profession.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where participants asked questions to put their doubts and queries to rest. The resource persons provided valuable insights and solutions to the queries, making the workshop beneficial for those who attended it.
Overall, the session was an excellent learning experience for the teachers.
