CBSE Teacher workshop- Joyful Teaching and Learning of Math

Math has been the foundation of many of our scientific and technological discoveries. However, it evokes emotions ranging from dislike, anxiety, to outright fear among children. CBSE, in order to help children cope with such feelings, conducted a Capacity Building Programme for teachers, named Joyful teaching and learning of Mathematics. The workshop was attended by our Math teachers, Ms Minoo Sethi and Ms Alka Kanwar on 17 and 18 December 2019 at DPS, Sector 45, Gurugram. The resource person was Ms Ishita Mukherjee.

The objective of the training programme was to enable teachers to help students appreciate the beauty of the subject by connecting with Math in daily activities, developing assessments for joyful learning, using technology to enhance learning, making use of innovative teaching strategies and linking Math with other fields like sports, dance, art etc.

The first day started with a short discussion on the history of Mathematics and its evolution. It continued with a presentation on developing ideas to motivate students through joyful activities, such as discovering, exploring, constructing, designing and solving problems that are wrapped in mathematical games, puzzles and hands-on activities. This was demonstrated through various activities like Tarsia puzzles, Tangram puzzles, pattern formation etc.

The resource person shared tips on how students can be taught to avoid those errors. Various websites were also named which can serve as useful resource material in helping teachers create joyful assessments and worksheets.

The workshop aimed at making the process of learning more interesting and effective by devising methods to engage students in meaningful activities and empowering teachers with appropriate pedagogy and educational tools to achieve the same.
