CBSE Workshop on Libraries in schools

On 21 December 2024, a workshop on Libraries was conducted by CBSE as a part of the Capacity Building Programme (CBP) at GLT Saraswati Bal Mandir, Nehru Nagar. The workshop aimed at strengthening the role of libraries in schools and promoting the development of reading habits among students in today’s digitally-driven age.

Approximately 30-40 librarians from schools across Delhi and NCR participated in the session. Mr Rajeev Massey represented The Indian School at this event.

The workshop was led by Ms Mamta Maggu, a highly accomplished librarian with over 25 years of experience in creative intellect, knowledge management and library sciences. Ms Maggu is also a Core Committee Member at the Ministry of Education (MOE).

The session commenced with the lighting of the lamp and a heartfelt rendition of the Saraswati Vandana, marking the beginning of a day filled with insightful discussions. The primary goal of the workshop was to encourage students to develop a reading habit amidst the growing dominance of digital media. The resource person also emphasised the significance of libraries in shaping the educational environment and their crucial role in institutions.

Ms Maggu stressed the role of library as the heart of an educational institution. Libraries are not just for storing books, but are central hubs for developing intellectual growth, creativity, and critical thinking among students. With the understanding that resources in many institutions can be limited, she shared valuable insights on making the most of available materials. This included careful management and organisation to ensure that every resource is accessible and beneficial to the readers. The challenge of fostering a habit of reading print media in an era dominated by social media and digital devices, was also discussed. Practical ideas for engaging students in reading physical books were shared, with a focus on encouraging them to discover the joys of reading beyond screens.

Ms Maggu highlighted the importance of contributing to the growth of public libraries, especially in Delhi. She encouraged participants to take active steps to enhance the resources, facilities, and outreach programmes at public libraries, creating a lasting impact on the community’s reading culture.

A significant takeaway was the emphasis on marketing libraries to attract more readers. The workshop stressed on creating attractive library spaces, showcasing the resources available, and maintaining an interactive atmosphere. The resource person advised organising events and activities to make the library more appealing and to encourage engagement. Ms Maggu also encouraged participants to implement creative and fun activities to inspire students and foster a love for reading.

The workshop concluded with a round of applause, marking its successful achievement in addressing the importance of libraries in educational settings. The participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to enhance their school libraries and cultivate reading habits among students. It was an interactive and informative session that successfully promoted libraries as vital resources within educational institutions and beyond. The event ended with a commitment from all participants to make their libraries more engaging and valuable to the student community.
