Community Outreach, classes 9 and 10.

On 31July12, 17 students from classes 9 and 10 accompanied by Ms.Sandhya Batheja on a visit to the neaby institution for the blind, Andh Vidyalaya. The students who had their birthdays in the months of June and July, had chosen to celebratetheir most important day with the children of the blind school and enthusiastically distributed chocolates, toffees, soaps, toothpasteetc. that they had carried from their home for the special purpose. The students appeared delighted to share the goodies and the joy. They also gave away packs of rice, dal, wheat flour and spices sent by the teachers of our Schoolas a token of their affection. Apart from empathy, the students, in their interaction, also got introduced and sensitised to a mostly unfamiliar and diverse economic strata of our society. An immediate appreciation of their own privileged lives would have been a consequence of the experience. The visit also gave the students an insight into how the blind are taught to navigate themselves in a sightless world. They learnt that a lack ofvision did not in any way diminisha zest for living and working in any of the challenged children. What they could not see with their eyes, they realised with their heightened other senses. The sheer happy countenance of the children at our host Vidyalaya was a invaluable lesson in itself and we came back in new humility. Shankar, one of the students of theAndh Vidyalaya was a wonderful case of a determination to live in dignity. He taught us the 2 ways of meeting difficulties in our lives ; either you change them or if you can't change them, change yourself to meet them. The calm on his face made him an ultimate example of his belief.   Report by Luvditya Khurana, class 10 A.
