E- Waste Disposal by our School on Earth Day

Electronic items that have lived out their lives can be classified as e-waste. For example, computers, cell phones, television sets, refrigerators, washing machines etc.

Disposing and recycling e-waste is a complex task because of the hazards involved in the process. Environmentally safe technology is expensive. E-waste is usually disposed off in landfills, incinerators or gets recycled, even reused. In landfills, chemicals from e-waste, gradually penetrate the soil and often pollute groundwater.

On the occasion of Earth Day2pm 22 April, 2013, we asked students to bring E-waste from home. Bins were provided at the reception and outside the computer lab for students to drop off their E Waste. The drive met with great enthusiasm! Myriad items of e- waste was collected including mobiles, computer accessories, video games, tv accessories etc.

School also assembled it's own E waste (old computers, printers, scanner, UPS etc.)

All this was then placed together for handing over to an authorised organisation named Chintan. In fact, students readily helped organising the collection suitably for handing over.

Chintan, an NGO was established in December, 1999 to address issues of sustainable consumption and social justice. It works for environmental justice in partnership with people and groups from diverse sections of society. Chintans focus is on ensuring equitable and sustainable production and consumption of materials and an improved disposal of waste.

Chintan delivers all e-waste to authorised recyclers. They will soon award our School a certificate for safe disposal of E-waste.
