Evening excursion for a Children's Orchestra, class 9.
The India Habitat Centre offers a plethora of performances from time to time. On July 18, 2013, Mr. Tara Chand and I accompanied 15 students from class IX to listen to an orchestra by children below the ages of 18 years. Our students were excited at the prospect of this unusual opportunity and we entered the auditorium packed with the parents and friends of the children performing in the orchestra. Diverse instruments both Indian and western, were used as a synthesis, namely the flute, guitar, the jal tarang, tabla, santoor, keyboard and the congo.
Once the performance commenced the audience stilled as everyone listened silence to the springing notes. The performers were fully in focus and their fingers seemingly floated. Soon they seemed ensconced in the harmony of their sound and several of us were getting transported too.
The orchestra performed three pieces-
1) An ode to God to thank Him for His blessings
2) A special piece prepared by the students where each student performed separately and then collectively as a group.
3) A rendition of Hum Hoge Kamyab as a tribute it to the victims of Uttarakhand.
Such was the effect of the performance that the Director of the Habitat Centre requested the second piece to be played again! He applauded the efforts of the children and hoped for more such performances. The audience offered a standing ovation.
Our students were delighted by the opportunity of such an impressive performance.
