The altruistic students of The Indian School participated with lan and enthusiasm in a series of indoor and outdoor activities as part of the Environment Week celebrations at School from 8 to 12 July 2019.
A large contingent of ninety-eight nature lovers of class VII embarked on an educative visit to the Butterfly Park at Lodhi Garden on 12 July. The group left for the park early in the morning and was accompanied by their class teachers.
A 3-acre area in Lodhi Garden has been converted into a butterfly conservatory. A collaborative effort of NDMC, CEDME ( Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems, University of Delhi) and activist group Green Circle), it has a small insectory with 22 host plants for butterfly larvae. The conservatory area has been declared an insecticide and herbicide-free zone.
The young environmentalists were awed by rows of fifty-eight species of herbal plants being nurtured in the herbal garden. These medicinal plants are well-known for their healing properties and are extensively used in treating several diseases. The sight of colourful butterflies and buzzing bees engaged in the pollination process impressed the students.
