Excursion to Jantar Mantar, class 4.

A class trip..the minute the children heard that a trip was being planned they were all excited. They could not wait for the 9th! Consent slips started coming in from the very next day!

Soon the day arrived and the children were restive to leave. During the bus ride we discussed what they knew about our venue. A general consensus that Jantar Mantar is a 'bhool-bhulaiya' was soon corrected by the guide there.

It was a nice sunny day and the children had a lot of fun as they learned. They were fascinated to learn how the time, seasons, etc. were determined by the shadow of the sun and the light of the moon. The guide explained how critical Jantar Mantar was for the people of the time. [gallery columns="2"] Jantar Mantar ( Yantra - instruments, mantra - formulae) was constructed in 1724. Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur who built this observatory went on to build other observatories in Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. Jai Singh had found the existing astronomical instruments too small to take correct measurements and so he built these larger and more accurate instruments. The instruments at Jantar Mantar are fascinating for their ingenuity, but accurate observations can no longer be made from here because of the tall buildings around.

After learning about the importance and use of Jantar Mantar the children let their hair down, as it were, playing and enjoying the yummy snack their moms had packed for them.
