Financial Literacy Workshop

On 25th November, 2015 a special workshop was conducted for the students of classes 8 to 10 as a build-up to the upcoming National Financial Literacy Assessment Test ( NFLAT) to be held on 28th November,2015. The session was conducted by Karvy Private Wealth Ltd. They named the session the ArthikGyan Learning Program. The duration of the session was 5 hours, in which several topics related to financial literacy were discussed. The ten topics discussed in the session were:

-Money Matters: We were taught how to deal with money and were told about assets and liabilities. -Saving: This included cash flow statements (the record of ones expenditure and income). -Banking: Different types of bank accounts were discussed- Savings and Current Accounts. -Insurance: Its basic principle is transfer of risk and peace of mind. -Understanding Investments: Investments are the instruments that help in the growth of money. -Stocks and Bonds: We were told about the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and the NSE (National Stock Exchange) -Investment Options: Investment options were compared to highlight their features. -Borrowing -Financial Planning -Retirement Planning

In order to make the session more interesting and to familiarise students with lingo relating to stock markets, the students were made to participate in a quiz. They were divided into two teams namely, the Bulls ( these were the brokers who expect the stock market to go up) and the Bears ( these were the brokers who expect the stock market to go down). The questions were related to the above topics. Some examples:

Q1. Which is the largest private sector bank in terms of market capitalisation? - Ans) ICICI Bank Q2. The market that shows downward movement is- Ans) Bear Phase Q3. Retail Banks are financial banks that serve - Ans) Customers.

By the end of the session, students were acquainted with terms relating to financial matters and in better stead to appear for the upcoming National Financial Literacy Assessment Test.
