Hindi Hai Hum! Observing Hindi Diwas

On 14 September 2018, Madhuban Educational Books held a Hindi Vichar Goshthi named Hindi Hain Hum!, on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. Three teachers of the Hindi department of our School, Dr. Shikha Sharma ( HOD), Ms. Archana Sharma and Ms. Mridula Tiwari participated in the programme. The chief guest on the occasion was Honourable Governor of Goa, Ms. Mridula Sinha, also a renowned Hindi author and poet. The other distinguished personalities who graced the occasion were Shri Leeladhar Mandloi, Director Bhartiya Gyanpeeth, Prof. Irtaza Kareem, Director NCPUL, Mr. Divik Ramesh, poet and story writer, Dr. Kshama Sharma, story writer and senior journalist, and Mr. Shams Tahir Khan, anchor with AajTak.

In her speech, Ms. Mridula Sinha said that Hindi will become a global language only when it becomes the language of the family. She held that it is important for us to sit as families and talk with the youth of today. Studying in an English medium school does not mean that you relegate Hindi to a side and neglect it.

The next speaker, Mr. Leeladhar Mandaloi was of the opinion that a teacher is successful only when he/she is able to understand the students as persons. He told the teachers that whenever they teach something, especially the work of a writer, it is essential that they understand the time-space in which that poem or story is written.

Dr. Kashma Sharma spoke about how children want entertainment from a story. He asked the teachers to give students only those things to read which they love to read, whether a fairy tale or a story based on real life.

Mr. Shams Tahir Khan maintained that one should always try to write in the language that one speaks, so that it reaches out to more people. He blamed the social media for murdering many words by using their short forms.

The last speaker of the day, Ms. Divik Ramesh, drew attention to the history of Indian childrens literature and how it is meant not only for children, but also for adults equally.

It is not everyday that one gets an opportunity to listen to such a distinguished panel of speakers. We were extremely privileged to have been a part of this elevating and educative experience.

Dr. Shikha Sharma.
