Honour at inter school 'Queer Debate'

Students of classes 9 and 10 of our School were invited for an inter school debate, titled The Queer Debate, at the Heritage School, Vasant Kunj. The debate was a part of the host school's annual literary fest, Samanvay and was held on 31st January 2017.

The debate was structured as a panel discussion where participants discussed issues relating to the LGBTQ community in our country. Each participant was allotted a personality who has offered a view on the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ community. He/ she was expected to present his case from the perspective of the personality allotted.

Some of these personalities were Amitabh Bachchan, Baba Ramdev, Sonia Gandhi, Udhav Thackarey, Madan Mohan Joshi, Aamir Khan and Karan Johar.

Vigorous points of view rallied back and forth as participants weighed their words, pondered and articulated on the rights of the LGBTQ community and expressed their wholehearted acceptance of the so-called divergent folk'. Taking after Michele Foucault, famous theorist of Postmodernism and Sexuality, The Indian School participants questioned the very act of calling these people queer and by extension the occasion of a debate such as this too! The entire audience seemed dumbfounded! In fact our speakers received a big applause from the receptive audience.

The audience was treated to a cascade of words a young minds threaded their way through yin and yang, with literary embellishments and artillery equally!

The first position was taken by Sanika Savdeka of Presedium School, Gurgaon; the second position was secured by Avantika Chodha of The Indian School while the third was taken by Mahdeep Singh of Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj.
