Honours at the Jet Toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics
The AWIM ( A World in Motion) and SAE ( Society of Automotive Engineers), in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki India organised the Jet Toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics on 24 October, 2018. The event was held at the Maruti Suzuki Training Academy in Gurugram.
21 schools of Delhi and Gurugram took part in the mega event. Our Astha Chaudhri, Piyush Tomar, Mehak and Khyati Sachdeva of class V participated in the Skimmer event while Ram Dhingra, Geetika Gupta, Dheevam Singh and Arshia Sharma of class VI participated in the Jet Toy event. 2 student volunteers of the Jamia Milia Engineering College and the School science teachers trained our students for 3 months preceding this regional quest.

To start with, the participating students of the Skimmer were handed a kit containing materials for assembling a toy car/skimmer. The event entailed that contestants construct paper sailboats and test the effect of the varying shapes of the sail and its sizes, its construction style and the skimmers performance. Friction, force, surface area and design were some of the concepts sought to be explored by the event.
The contestants in the Jet Toy event were required to build a balloon-powered toy car that met specific performance criteria like travel time, weight-carrying capacity and maximum speed. Jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design. These were the core scientific concepts challenged in this exercise.
The contesting teams had to assign a winsome name to their teams and their toys, contrive a logo, write a succinct slogan, pen the salient features of their concept toys and present their innovations.
The fabricated creations were judged on different criteria, namely, maximum speed, maximum distance, maximum time, accuracy, maximum weight-carrying capacity, aesthetics and presentation.
Learning and fun went hand in hand. The day saw inspiring performances, dynamic track events, enthusiastic presentation rounds and scientific excellence in abundance.
Our Schools jet toy team won the Best Sportsmanship award and our skimmer team won the Best Accuracy award and the First Runners Up Trophy!
The experience was a memorable exploration and experimentation of key scientific concepts and skills that kindled the imaginations of the students and drew them to express their divergent thinking in their creations.
