Honours in Debating and Drama at B.K Birla Centre for Education, Pune.

Our excitement was infectious as our team of debaters, quizzers and dramatists comprising Alisamar Hussain,Pranati Haldia , Shubham Airi , Ritwik Arora, Pratistha Kohli, Chinmaya Iyer, Aueshic Das, Yash Sharma and Simran Narula along with our teacher Ms. Vandana Misra boarded the train on 2/3rd October, 2015 at midnight for Kalyan.

Being nervous and yet excited, we spent the journey testing each other on diverse facts. The train journey was long yet full of fun. We reached Kalyan and then caught another train to reach Pune. As life is unpredictable,so was our train, which was delayed by 6 hours and we had to wait at the Kalyan station for the train. From there we reached Lonavala where a bus was waiting for us. We reached the host school at last but did not allow this long journey to dampen our fervour at all. We proceeded to the dormitories to get ourselves ready for the first event.

The first event was the quiz, in which a team of 3 was to participate. The participants were Shubham Airi, Alisamar Hussain and Mubashshir Ali who cleared the preliminary round with flying colours. They continued to emerge victorious in their attempt to reach the finals. While Alisamar took on the challenge of science and sports, Shubham and Mubashshir supported him on politics and history. After a long drawn exchange with our competing schools like St. Michaels School Siliguri, Singapore International, Mumbai and DAV, Hazaribagh, The Indian School team took 4th position.

The next event was the film review in which Yash took the drama aspect and Chinmaya worked on analysing the music. This was their first exposure at such an event and they did take back a lot of knowledge as well as learned the key aspects of writing a review. Next was the English Dramatics where the topic was NO MAN IS AN ISLAND and the Indianites conceived a wonderful performance. The dramatics team ended up with the Best Script Award.

The second day was the debate and each team had to select 3 participants to take part in the debate, wherein in the preliminary round, only 2 speakers would speak, 1 in a turncoat debate, and the other as extempore. The turncoat topics were to be given to us 2 minutes before, following which a 3 minute turncoat had to be presented. The extempore speakers were to be given only a minute to prepare their 2 minute speech! A parliamentary-style debate was to follow the successful completion of this round.

Our school decided to field Alisamar Hussain for the turncoat. Alongside, Pranati Haldia represented our School in the extempore. After a thrilling preliminary round, our school qualified for the semi - final round. The semi - final round followed a parliamentary motion extension format debate. The Indian School was put up against Singapore International School and our school showcased Pranati as the President speaker, Shubham as the Vice President Speaker and Alisamar as Interjector. The topic for the semi - final was " This house believes that all countries have an informed choice: we are neither Russia nor U.S.A" and our team represented the proposition. After an interesting debate The Indian School was declared the first finalists. The final round was against Mayo College Girls' School, Ajmer. The topic of the final round was This house believes that World War 4 would be fought with sticks and stones". And our school again spoke for the proposition. Our school ended up as Runners-Up in the English Debate and Pranati Haldia was awarded BEST SPEAKER ( FINALS ). The day had ended and the team went for a celebratory dinner at a famous restaurant in the outskirts of Pune.

After an enriching and enjoyable experience at B.K Birla Centre for Education we returned to Delhi with heavy hearts, and yet with minds sharper than ever! We would like to thank the School for giving us an opportunity as memorable as this. We were truly privileged to be in the crme la crme of schools from across India, and came back with just one thought- Indianites can achieve anything and everything they want and are capable being the best of best. Unity and Teamwork is what this competition taught us.
