Honours lifted at DPS Senior Inter school English Debate.

On 9th October 2015, Shivali Anand, Pranati Haldia and Shubham Airi of class XI represented School at Opinions Matter, an Inter-School English Debate hosted by Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. The topic for the debate was- Tried by the media, sentenced for life-yet the jury triumphs. Thirteen Schools including ten DPS schools from all over Delhi and NCR participated in the event.

The panel of judges included Mr. Amit Arora, chartered accountant, news anchor and journalist with over fifteen years of experience at Doordarshan and All India Radio, Ms. Ruchira Jaitley, executive vice president at Pepsico, India and Mr. Gautam Jaitley, publisher and scriptwriter.

The debate was conducted in a conventional manner, where each speaker was given 3 minutes to speak. Shivali, speaking in favour of the topic, emphasised that the media creates a social hype, influencing the jurys verdict. Notwithstanding the fact the jury is still the one that has the supreme authority. Pranati spoke against the topic citing examples to prove that the jury does not always triumph there are other factors too. Shubham got the opportunity to interject with his thought-provoking questions. The participants were witty enough to subtly take digs at each other. The manner in which the participants used sarcasm rather than aggression to oppose the points put forward by their rivals, was praiseworthy.

The debators were marked on the basis of their research, presentation and their reaction to the interjector, who countered the speakers with their hard-hitting questions. The judges were highly impressed with the creativity, frame of reference, diction and the style of delivery.

Shivali was adjudged Best Speaker and Pranati secured the Third position for the same. The ebullient students of the Indian school joyously lifted the Best Team Award and the Rolling Trophy. Submitted by Ms. Nidhi Bindra.
