IIT Delhi lecture on 'The Science Behind Hard Disks'

The Indian School attended a lecture titled “The Science Behind Hard Disks” at IIT Delhi on 11 October 2025.

Twenty students from classes IX and X participated in a session conducted by Dr Rajeev Shorey, distinguished scientist, member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Senior Member of the IEEE, and Adjunct Faculty at IIT Delhi.

Dr Shorey explained the evolution of hard disks, showing how early models developed into today’s compact devices. Students learnt about its key components such as the magnetic platter and the read head, along with error-correction methods used to ensure accurate data retrieval. Dr Shorey also highlighted the future of storage through Solid-State Drives (SSDs), one of the few practical applications of quantum mechanics. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A.
