Interaction with School chairman, Mr Goradia- The current political scenario in India.

On Monday, 6 August 2018, the students of classes 6 and 7 were delighted to attend an informative and interactive session with School Chairman, Mr. Prafull Goradia, on the topic The current political scenario in India in the School auditorium.

The talk began with a brief introduction by Vice- Principal, Dr. Anu Singh. This was followed by Mr. Goradias valuable insights on the topics, One nation One election, and The history of the National Register of Citizens and its current status.

The session began with Sir enlightening us about the independence of India in 1947 and focussing on the Gandhi familys lineage in the political sphere of India. He said that the initial politics of independent India worked around caring for our country with most of the leaders very idealistic in their ambitions. The focus was on how the Congress leaders occupied mainstream positions in governing the country. It was not until Late Sri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee (belonging to BJP) formed the government that we saw a shift in the leadership of the country. Shri Vajpayee was said to be an admirer of Jawaharlal Nehru and his system of governance.

Sir also discussed simultaneous elections by briefing us about the first elections that were held in March 1952 followed by 1957 and further in 1962, where all states except Kerala held elections at the same time.

Since the NRC has been in the news for some time, Sir talked about the history of illegal immigrants who were actually the occupants of Char Lands, a place formed by the confluence of the rivers of Assam and East Bengal. The influx of people in these areas increased due to Jinnahs quest for power. It was on his command that his trusted ally, Mohammad Sadulah, was asked to convince the people of the Goalpara region as he wanted an increased vote bank.

Sir added that with Rajiv Gandhi coming to power in 1985, we had the Assam Accord and it was agreed that those who arrived in Assam till 1966 were to be accepted as citizens of the state. People entering from 1966-1971 could be tried and anybody entering the state after that was to be considered an illegal immigrant. The NRC was be readied in 1985 but it was not done until Justice Gogoi recently ordered the same.

Sirs talks have always provided students information beyond the textbooks. There was a lot of excitement amongst students as there were some aspects of the talk that were absolutely new to them. After sharing his views with the students, Sir also answered questions asked by them regarding not only the topic that was discussed, but also about better relations between India and Pakistan with the change in the Government of Pakistan.

The session brought forth a better understanding regarding the current political scenario of the nation and broadened our perspectives. We look forward to attending more sessions of this nature in the near future.
