Jet-toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics

Two organisations, AWIM, (A World in Motion) and SAE ( Society of Automotive Engineers), in collaboration with MARUTI Suzuki India Ltd., organised the Jet-toy and Skimmer Regional Olympics on 24th October 2017, at Rajokri. 25 schools of Delhi took part in this mega event.

Peehu Kashyap, Krunal Patel, Dheevam Singh and Niyati Khurana of class 5 participated in the Skimmer category. Hrdya Jain, Avishi Singh, Ekveer Sahoo and Manan Kakkar of class VI participated in the Jet toy category.

A team of student volunteers of Jamia Millia Engineering College and the science teachers of our School trained our students for this regional quest. The participating students were provided with a kit containing material for crafting the toy car/skimmer for practice purposes.

The contestants of the skimmer group had to construct paper sailboats and test the effect of the different shapes of the sail, sizes and construction methods for skimmer performance. Friction, force, surface area and design were some of the physical phenomena that students had to encounter in this challenge.

The jet toy contestants were required to build balloon-powered toy cars that met the specific performance criteria, like longest travel time, weight carrying capacity and maximum speed. Jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design were the core scientific concepts that they explored in this challenge.

The contesting teams also had to assign an appealing name to their team and their toy, formulate a logo, write a catchy slogan, pen down the salient features of their concept toy and present their innovation.

The fabricated toys were judged on different track rounds namely, the maximum speed, distance, time, accuracy, weight carrying capacity, aesthetics, cleanliness and presentation.

Learning and fun went hand in hand. The day saw beautiful performances, dynamic track events, enthusiastic presentation rounds and scientific excellence in plentitude.

Our skimmer team was the adjudged the Best Team for Cleanliness. The children returned home enriched with innovative ideas and a scientific mindset.

The experience was a spirited journey of exploration. It involved the experimentation of essential scientific concepts and skills, that caught the fantasy of students and motivated them to express their ideas through crafting automobiles. Perhaps what was tried as a hobby now might also make for a profession in the future!
