Joy of Giving Week culminates with a visit to Goonj

The students of The Indian School — Rishima Dubey (Class 11B), Kavya Joshi (Class 9A), Aarav Arora (Class 7B) and Ayaan (Class 5A) — accompanied by their teacher, Ms Hasba Shamim, visited the Goonj headquarters in New Delhi on Friday, 17 October, as part of a Diwali contribution initiative.

Goonj is a renowned organisation that channels surplus urban materials to rural communities, promoting dignity in both giving and receiving. The students handed over garments collected in a drive pre- Diwali and learnt about the organisation’s transformative work. They observed the meticulous sorting of garments and discovered how donated fabrics are innovatively repurposed into wedding outfits and footwear. They also explored sections where books, electronics, musical instruments and sports equipment are repaired for redistribution, and viewed a captivating display of vintage artefacts.

A visit to the Museum of Disasters highlighted Goonj’s vital role in relief efforts. The experience enriched students’ understanding of mindful contribution, resource conservation and empathy, reflecting the true spirit of Diwali.
