MAKING THE RIGHT CAREER CHOICE, a chat with our Chairman by SHLOK TOMER X C

On 2nd July, 2014 the students of class X got a chance to interact with Chairman Mr. Prafull Goradia to discuss about how to make our choices for the future. We had an enlightening conversation which was very informative.

We entered the A.V. Room with a lot of questions assailing us. Should one go for the choice of stream in which we feel interested or the one which our parents want for us or the one which might earn us the best salary. The talk started with a brain storming session on the topic. Mr. Goradia asked us to voice our queries and confusion regarding the choices before us and why it is important to for everyone to make the right choice.

Sir asked us whether we had heard of the legendary Dilip Kumar. He told us that Dilip Kumar was a student of Wilson college in Bombay (now Mumbai ) and loved to play football. He wanted to become the best footballer in the world! He practiced football every day and was very passionate about his ambitions, but his father did not approve. Dilip Kumar did not confront his parents and left home for Pune. In Pune he got a job at a club. As he was fluent in English he easily managed to communicate with the British officers and got promoted very early. He also started earning a lot. He returned home after some years and handed the money he has made to his mother.

Once again he was on the lookout for a job and he was not able to get one. In the process he met a Persian businessman in Pune who offered to find him a job. He took Dilip to the Bombay Talkies film studio in Mumbai where he got him the job of a helper. Here, soon the boss at Bombay Talkies and a famous actress spotted Dilip Kumar and gave him an offer for a job at Rs 1250 per month. His family members were aghast and refused to believe this! They phoned the director to confirm whether the money was the emolument per month or was it his annual income! Indeed, they were assured money the money offered was per month and the job was that of actor. Dilip's original name was Yusuf Khan and he was named Dilip Kumar by the director and the rest is history. Mr. Goradia emphasised the sincerity and dedication Dilip Kumar showed towards every job assigned to him. Every role he played outshone the last and he tread from one milestone to the next. A second example Mr. Goradia gave us was of the most famous person in India currently, our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi. He told us that unlike Dilip Kumar, Mr. Modi always had a clear focus about the choice for his future. He worked passionately to reach that position without any diversion of a family or any other.

After listening carefully to the distinctive sagas of these diverse personalities, we saw how interest and aptitude go hand in hand but sometimes life can lead us towards something quite else. It follows that whatever one pursues, one must be highly sincere towards it. Mr. Goradia ended by saying that one wouldnt have to 'work' a single day in life if one enjoys ones work. It will then be only fun everyday.

I feel privileged to have been a part of this interaction and look forward to such sessions with Sir.
