Multiple Intelligences' workshop for primary teachers
Presented by Chanda Sharma, Ms. Shalini Grover, Ms. Geetanjali Varma, Ms. Mahima Kapoor, Ms. Vandana Tewari
Culmination on January 8, 2014
After years of research, Howard Gardner proposed a new theory and definition of intelligence in his book, Frames of Mind (1983), The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. He is best known for his work in the area of Multiple Intelligences, which has been a career-long pursuit, to understand and describe the construct of intelligence. Most people are not total "geniuses" . Everyone is blessed with a mixture of several abilities from different intelligence types. To a large degree it is this "mixture" that determines uniqueness.
Teachers need to understand this and create opportunities of learning accordingly so that teachers can help students identify their strengths and no child is left behind, thus helping teachers to become innovative educators.
The workshop clearly illustrated the reasons why the theory of multiple intelligence should be used every day. To construct the teaching- learning process in a way to strengthen learning and make it meaningful.
The presentation was well- researched and intelligently executed. It was designed for teachers so that they are enabled to incorporate the concept in their lesson plans and their teaching. Hands-on activities kept the participants engaged, motivating fresh ideas to use in classroom teaching practice.
Gardner proposed that there are eight intelligences, namely, Linguistic -words and language; Logical-Mathematical logic and numbers; Musical music, sound, rhythm; Bodily-Kinesthetic- body movement control; Spatial-Visual images and space; Interpersonal other people's feelings; ntrapersonal self-awareness
Teachers of each subject conducted activities illustrating how subject learning could be made interesting for students with diverse interests by incorporating activities that include different intelligences.
The workshop presented an opportunity for development and learning as teachers revisited ideas learnt and demonstrated how these could be put in to practice in the classroom.
