Music workshop- Brahmo Sangeet

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet, musician, Nobel laureate, educationist- a multi-talented and multifaceted personality of Bengali culture, is an inspiration for all Indians. His soul-stirring music, Rabindra Sangeet is extremely popular in Bengal even in current times. Brahmo sangeet is a rendition of prayer songs by followers of the Brahmo Samaj. A workshop on Brahmo Sangeet was held at our School on 15 May 2018, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Gurudev and as a part of our School theme of the year, namely, States along the east coast of India. 35 students from classes VIII to XII attended this riveting workshop by Ms. Anuradha Sen, exponent of the art and alumnus of Gitobeetan, a renowned institution in Kolkata which trains in the music of Tagore.

She used a power point presentation to describe the contribution of Debendranath Thakur, Dwarkanath Thakur, Sri Keshab Chandra Sen, Jyotirindranath Tagore ( elder brother of Rabindranath) and of course Rabindranath himself. The PPT was interspersed with an enchanting rendition of verses of the various genres that make up what we know to be the Gurudevs music. Chiro bondhu chiro nirbhor, Aji shubho din e, Ami Je tomari kriparo bhikhari and Jani tumi mongolomoy, were some of the timeless specimens that Ms. Sen shared. Mr. Adhir Das, our School tabla teacher, matched the notes as they were sung, with the distinctive beats played traditionally with each genre. It made for quite a surreal ambience as the occasion culminated in a choral singing of the enduring Anondo loke. Our AV Room was filled with the spirit of an Upasana Mandir ( prayer hall of the Brahmos). Ms. Shuchismita Chatterjee.
