Rubiks Cubing Seminar

On the 18 January, 2014, a cubing seminar was organized on our School campus. The Speedcuber invited to School was Mr. Akash Rupela, Indias fastest cuber, who holds multiple records in speed- solving puzzles such as the Rubiks Cube, the 4x4 , 5x5 professor and the 7x7 cube.

There were about 80 students who attended the seminar which began with the introduction of our resource person and his various achievements in the sport of speed-solving. After that, Mr. Rupela gave a brief description of the various types of cubes, a few of which are: the 4x4, 5x5, Megaminx, Pyraminx and Skewb. Also the various types of solving that are seen in competitions, namely, One-hand solving , Blindfold-solving and solving with feet . All this information was presented to us with the help of a PPT and live- demonstrations.

After this, the speaker showed us a video- clip of a Brazilian robot which was designed to solve the Rubiks Cube in the blink of an eye! This robot has the ability to solve the cube in less than 2 seconds on each solve, we were told!

He then showed a few example of solves of all the different types of cubes he had brought along. He showed a regular cube solve; 4x4 and 5x5 solve; a one- hand solve and even a blindfolded solve.

In the end Mr. Rupela wound up the event with a final solve using his feet! Our jaws simply dropped! The entire interaction had been a hit.

Akash was also very happy to see that there were so many children in our school who were interested in this sport. He also said that he looks forward to visiting our School again if given an opportunity. I offered thanks to the Speaker forsparing his time and and also for creating an enthusiasm for the mind game.

We all hope to have more such seminars in the future.
