Science Week interaction with an expert of DNA and Precision Medicine
The Indian School held an educational workshop on DNA and Precision Medicine for the students of classes X, XI, and XII on August 10, 2023 as a part of Science Week. The guest speaker was Dr Indrakant Singh, professor and head of the Department of Zoology at Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi.
The talk explained the significance of DNA in unravelling the mysteries of human health. It highlighted how genetic advances have paved the way for precision medicine, where treatments are tailored to an individual's unique genetic makeup. The speaker discussed breakthroughs in genomics and the role of technology in decoding DNA sequences swiftly and accurately.

Furthermore, the talk emphasised the impact of precision medicine on patient outcomes. Healthcare providers can customise treatments for maximum efficacy and minimal side effects by identifying genetic variations that predispose individuals to certain diseases. The speaker also showcased real-life success stories where precision medicine has transformed lives.
Dr Singh used an analysis of DNA and research that has gone into it, to explain the origins and progression of genomics. He talked about Mendel's research, the Human Genome Project, and the Watson-Crick model. He energetically outlined the benefits of genetic therapies and how they function.
The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the journey from genetic information to the cutting-edge field of personalised healthcare. It was fascinating and informative and served as a platform for the students to learn more about genomic medicine's past, present, and future.
