On 21 August 2026, as a part of our School Science Week 2026, a session was organised for the students of Classes XI and XII. The session was conducted by Ms Richa Malhotra, Senior Software Developer at Microsoft, who spoke on the topic “From Migration to Transformation, Growing with AI”.
The session gave the students an interesting insight into how rapidly technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), has become a part of our everyday lives. Ms Malhotra began by transporting her audience back in time to when mobile phones were not a part of our daily lives and compared it with the present, where AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, recommendation systems, and generative AI have become increasingly common. She explained that AI is already working quietly in the background of many things that we use every day. From the songs and videos recommended to us, to various digital tools and automated systems, AI has gradually become a part of our lives, often without us even noticing it.
One of the most interesting parts of the session was the discussion about AI and the future of jobs and careers. Ms Malhotra encouraged the students not to look at AI with fear. She explained that while AI may take over many repetitive tasks, it will also create opportunities for people to focus on skills that require creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and innovation. She also reminded the students that AI is not better than the human mind. Although AI can process large amounts of information and generate content, qualities such as curiosity, creativity, emotions, judgement, and original thinking are uniquely human. These qualities will continue to be important even as technology advances.
Ms Malhotra also shared five important skills that students should develop to work and grow alongside AI:
1. Learning how to learn
Technology is constantly changing, so one must be willing to keep learning and adapting. The ability to learn new tools and skills will be more valuable than simply relying on what we already know.
2. Developing problem-solving skills
AI can provide answers, but it is up to us to identify the right questions and understand the problems we are trying to solve. Developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities will help people use AI effectively rather than depend on it completely.
3. Understanding technology
Whatever career one chooses, having a basic understanding of technology and AI will be useful. It will help one feel more confident in a world where technology is becoming a part of almost every field.
4. Building curiosity
Curiosity encourages us to ask questions, explore new ideas, and discover possibilities. Ms. Malhotra encouraged the students to remain curious because curiosity can lead to creativity, innovation, and new solutions.
5. Communicating clearly
Communication is a skill that will always remain important. Being able to express our ideas clearly, listening to others, collaborating, and understanding different perspectives will help one work effectively with both people and technology.
The session was highly informative, engaging, and thought-provoking. It gave the students a clearer understanding of both, the opportunities and challenges that AI brings and encouraged them to approach the future with curiosity, confidence, and an open mind.
