Skype session- History of textiles in India

On 16th August17, students of classes XI and XII pursuing Fashion Studies, engaged in an interactive skype session on the History of textiles in India with Mr Ranjitsinh Bisale, a teacher at a government school in Pune, who conducted this session with hundreds of schools through Microsoft.

During the session, Mr. Bisale said that textiles have a long history in India. In fact, the country has a textile tradition that can be traced to the third century, and this has greatly inspired the ways fabrics are woven, dyed and decorated today. He presented a short power point presentation to explain the growth of textile industries in India, especially the cotton industry, which accounts for a large portion of the total industrial output in the country each year. The cotton textile industry is now in a position to meet the total demand for textiles in the home market and to still leave a sufficient surplus for export.

The students watched a video which showcased the process of textile production from raw cotton to finished fabrics.

Towards the end of the session, students asked the speaker about the impact of 3D printing technology on traditional machinery and production, and how the ban of plastic bags will affect the production of fibres like jute and cotton.

This was an extremely enriching experience and the students wished to be a part of more such exchanges in the future.
