Soap-Making Workshop- a Citizenship initiative on 24 July, 2014.
The main purpose of organising this workshop was to teach our children easier, innovative and cost effective ways of making homemade soap. At the same time, the aim was to learn ways of improving the quality of soap that we have been making for our Shramdaan project.
The chemistry lab awaited our group of students and teachers, eager to learn and participate. The expert then demonstrated the
process which involved two types of soap flakes ( transparent and opaque), essence, and colour. The flakes were heated in a microwave , colour/essence added in and the mixture poured into moulds. A variety of techniques and how to mix different variations of fragrances that complement each other were demonstrated.

The moulds were very attractive and produced soaps from 20 gm to 50 gm each in many beautiful shapes. All the children got a hands'-on experience in making these soaps and got to take home a small sample each.
The advantage of the techniques taught was that all heating was done in a microwave instead of on flame. Besides the soap flakes which were glycerine-based saved a lot of time, when compared what we did earlier where we prepared the base ourselves.
An enriching and fun morning, we are excited to quickly bring out our new range. Wait and watch the Shramdaan desk.
