Ambedkar Jayanti is observed on 14th April and the assembly started with a short talk on the illustrious son of India. Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, popularly called Babasaheb Ambedkar, was one of the architects of the Indian constitution. He was a an eminent jurist. Ambedkar's efforts to eradicate social evils like untouchability and caste restrictions were remarkable. The leader, through his life, fought for the rights of the dalits and other socially backward classes. During the assembly, several students came forward to share interesting facts from the life of Dr. Ambedkar. Next, the students presented a skit on Baisakhi, the popular festival of the Punjab. As we know, Baisakhi is celebrated every year on 13th April and not only marks Spring but is also a celebration of harvest and abundance. The skit depicted the scene of a typical Baisakhi mela to demonstrate how people in the Punjab get celebrate this festival as a community. There is another reason why this day is so important, particularly for the Sikhs. 13 year old Gobind Rai was formally installed as Guru Gobind Singh and the 10th Guru on the occasion of Baisakhi in 1676. The children spoke on stage by turn, about important aspects from his life and teachings. The assembly concluded with a resplendent and energetic bhangra that made for a truly spirited stage! As flamboyant as the festival itself. Ms. Priya Manchanda.
