Special assembly on Ganesh Chaturthi in the primary

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in the month of Bhadra of the Hindu Calendar. It was the great nationalist leader and freedom fighter, Balgangadhar Tilak who asserted a national identity by making the worship of Lord Ganpati a community celebration. He demonstrated to the British masters how the common people of Maharashtra could assert their identity in a non-violent way. The British rulers were at a loss for they could neither object nor use force against a religious and cultural function!

A special assembly was conducted by the students of class V-D on 29 August 2014 on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The assembly commenced with a melodious invocation, the Ganesh Vandana by the junior choir. The choir was composed of students from all the sections of class V. Renisha, Satyapriy, Sreejoni, Bareena and Sharanya, then, by turn spoke on stage about the festival, and it's significance. A poem composed by Gurmeher, Samaara Dhhriti, Vani, Gurmeher, Vedika, Dakshita on Ganpati was jointly recited.

Shreya narrated the story of how Ganesh, the son of Parvati, acquired his elephant head. The audience listened in rapt attention. Priyanshu narrated a story on Ganesh cursing the moon. The assembly concluded with a Ganesh arti by the choir followed by a rhythmic group dance. How a single festival could unite so many diverse peoples of India was made amply clear.

Here the participation of the entire class V D offered every student an opportunity to showcase talent. We were delighted that no child fell short of either enthusiasm or poise!
