SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT MOOLCHAND MEDICITY FOR PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS

Six students of class XI - Vinika Harjai, Tanishka Sehgal, Sifat Sadh, Srishti Chauhan, Saloni Khindri and Anisha Khurana were selected for a summer internship at Moolchand Hospital organized from 3 to 7, 9 and 10 June, 2014.

On the first day we were introduced to senior interns under the aegis of renowned psychiatrist, Dr.Jitendra Nagpal . They introduced us to some imperative facts about psychology and its various sub-fields. They gave us an overview of each field and also explained the pros and cons of taking psychology at college level. They spoke of a tremendous growth potential in the stream.

For the next four days the seniors oriented us about the various psychological disorders like -

Bipolar disorder- is a mental illness characterized by periods of elevated moods and periods of depression.

Schizophrenia-characterized by a failure to distinguish between what is real and unreal.

Autism- is finding difficulty in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and repetitive behaviour.

Several other disorders were also discussed. To strengthen our learning, we were divided into two groups with three people in each and were asked to present a powerpoint presentation on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia and its symptoms.

The next day the seniors seemed quite impressed with our efforts and appreciated our work. They then, discussed the kinds of patients they come across during sessions, and shared one of the incidents where a schizophrenic patient horrified them by suddenly pulling out a knife. Though the situation was handled smoothly without creating a panic, with this, they introduced the requirement of suitable personality traits in a psychologist. Some of the basic traits are patience, empathy, unconditional positive regard and a non-judgmental attitude.

On the last day we discussed personality disorders, hallucinations, illusions and delusion. We also got to read some case histories of patients suffering from these disorders. It gave us an interface with real situations and enhanced our knowledge. The seniors were very supportive towards us and assured us that if we require any guidance in future they would happily help us.

We chose this internship because of our interest in the subject and we cant stop thanking School for exposing us to such a vast treasure of experiential knowledge available from Dr. Jitendra Nagpal . This valuable information would definitely help us in the future.
