Teacher workshop at LSR National Math Day

A seminar conducted at Lady Shri Ram College on 22 December 2023, on the occasion of National Mathematics Day, commemorating Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birth anniversary, was indeed a memorable event.

Ms Payal Sharma represented The Indian School at the seminar, which saw participation from various schools and colleges across Delhi. Dr Jonaki Ghosh, senior faculty member, felicitated Professor TV Venkateshwaran, eminent resource personnel, who was introduced to the gathering.

As part of an ice-breaking activity, Professor Venkateshwaran engaged the participants by encouraging them to introduce themselves and initiated conversations. He shared intriguing details about Ramanujan’s life, emphasising on three key words: ‘enigma, inspire, and hope.’ Ramanujan’s remarkable achievements, including compiling nearly 3,900 novel formulae during his short life, were highlighted. Despite facing numerous challenges, Ramanujan’s unconventional results, such as the Ramanujan Prime, Theta Function, Partition Formulae, and Mock Theta functions, inspired extensive mathematical research. Prof. Venkateshwaran emphasised that these once-rejected formulae are now being proven correct, showcasing Ramanujan’s enduring impact.

The seminar’s second session, led by Dr Jonaki Ghosh, involved challenging the participants with various mathematical puzzles. The collaborative brainstorming by the participants resulted in creative solutions, such as using arithmetic progression series and framing magic squares. Dr Ghosh appreciated the team spirit and out-of-the-box thinking displayed by the teachers.

At the end of the day, the participants shared their learning experiences and highlighted the opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow educators. The facilitators’ profound technical and pedagogical knowledge greatly benefited the participants, making the seminar both informative and interactive. The event proved to be a constructive and enriching experience for all involved, further promoting the significance of National Mathematics Day and the legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
