On September 11, a Physics workshop, ' An excursion in magnetism and optics' was held at Birla Vidya Niketan by Dr. B. N. Das, retired professor, Presidency College, Kolkata. Ms. Archana Raichandani our senior science teachers attended the workshop.
The workshop sought to explain the concepts of magnetism and optics using eye- catching and low cost activities, to inculcate curiosity and logical thinking among students.
Dr. Das conducted activities to demonstrate how magnetism is induced. He distinguished between ferro, para and dia magnetic substances using neodymium magnets, ring magnets, iron fillings etc.
[gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="2"]For Optics, stress was laid on the topic of TIR (Total Internal Reflection), refraction through lens, scattering using LED torch, convex lens and soap solution.
The workshop was very informative and indeed exposed its listeners to the different ways in which the study of magnetism can be made more effective.
I enjoyed the experience and look forward to more such opportunities in the future.
