Teacher workshop on 21st Century Skills

On 28 May 2024, Dr Alka Mahajan, an noted academician and psychotherapist conducted a workshop for the teachers of The Indian School (Primary to class 8) to equip them with essential 21st century skills. The workshop aimed to empower educators to foster holistic development among students and prepare them for success in the modern world.

The workshop began with a breathing exercise, emphasising the significance of positivity and smiles in our daily lives, setting a positive tone for the session. Teachers were divided into groups and were encouraged to share their understanding of the 21st century skills and their importance. This interactive session allowed for diverse perspectives to be shared, enriching the learning experience for all participants.

Essential 21st Century Skills - The 6 Cs:

  • Care: Dr Mahajan emphasised the importance of caring for student well being and self worth. A group activity titled Mental Wellness Drive, sparked creativity and innovative ideas to promote mental wellness among students.

  • Communication: The significance of effective communication in fostering connections and understanding was highlighted. Groups were tasked with preparing TED talks on the themes of care and communication, encouraging them to reflect on these important aspects of teaching.

  • Collaboration: The importance of working together towards common goals, promoting teamwork and cooperation among students, was discussed.

  • Critical Thinking: Dr Mahajan underscored the importance of critical thinking in enabling students to analyse, evaluate, and solve problems effectively.

  • Creativity: The power of imagination and innovation in generating new ideas and solutions to challenges, was explored.

  • Connection: The interconnectedness of knowledge and experiences was discussed, emphasising the importance of helping students see the bigger picture.

Dr Mahajan concluded the workshop by stressing on the importance of nurturing students to become lifelong learners. She reminded teachers that having ideas is not enough; action must be taken to bring those ideas to life. By embracing the 6 Cs and fostering a culture of care, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and connection, educators can empower students to thrive in the 21st century.

The workshop conducted by Dr Alka Mahajan thus provided teachers with valuable insights and practical strategies for integrating essential 21st century skills into teaching practices. By nurturing these skills, educators can play a vital role in preparing students to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, ensuring their success and well being.
