Teacher workshop on Creative Writing and Poetry
Creative writing is one of the most powerful ways to express emotions, thoughts and ideas. In its consistent effort to empower and let the teachers feel confident about writing, The Indian School, sent two teachers of the English department, Ms. Vandana Tewari and Ms. Taniya Sutradhar, to attend an interesting and interactive workshop on the topic Developing Creative Writing skills and Writing Poetry. The workshop was conducted at Springdales School, Pusa Road on 17 May 2019 for the teachers of literature from all over Delhi.
Resource person Dr. Ranjini Krishnaswamy, an educational consultant and Director of Dosti Foundation School, Thane, Mumbai, spoke of the various methods and techniques to develop the LSRW skills in students. She focused on different kinds of poetry like Haiku, a form of Japanese poem writing, the Ballad, Limerick, Epic, Sonnet, Acrostic, Elegy, Free Verse, Cinquain and Tanka.
The workshop was very informative and motivating. It was an interactive session. Teachers were asked to prepare questions based on comprehension passages and express their feelings and emotions using verse. Ms Krishnaswamy mentioned ways by which a teacher can make learning fun for the students and at the same time hone their language skills.
The workshop laid importance on observing ones surroundings closely and relating it with things that are known to oneself. It was suggested that once a person comes up with ideas, it is important to indulge in free writing and record all thoughts without inhibition. It is only when all the thoughts have been put down on paper that one should move towards structuring the piece of writing by editing, altering, correcting the writing, and taking feedback on it.
The tips given were beneficial for the teachers as they brought clarity on how a class on poetry could be conducted and made interesting for students. At the end of the session, participation certificates were handed to the teacher- participants.
