A workshop on introducing early childhood music education was organised on 16 December 2023 at The Study School, East of Kailash. The workshop welcomed participants from various schools. Ms Bharti Bedi and Ms Itisha Sharma attended the workshop from The Indian School.
The workshop was conducted by Maestro Saskia Rao-de Haas, Founder of Sangeet4All, the first Indian music curriculum for young learners. Ms Rao is an accomplished Western classical cellist, who plays folk music from Eastern Europe and has composed music for dance, film and theatre. She is acclaimed for bridging the gap between Western and Indian classical music traditions.
The workshop aimed to bring quality music education to every child. Ms Rao emphasised that music plays a crucial role in the holistic development of pre school children. It enhances their cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills. Through music, children can express themselves, improve their language skills and develop creativity. She also provided various strategies for integrating music into the daily routines and activities of preschool classrooms. These included using songs and rhymes to teach concepts, incorporating musical instruments and movement and creating a musical environment that fosters exploration and imagination.
The workshop also highlighted the benefits of music for teachers. Engaging in music activities can reduce stress, enhance teacher-student relationships and create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
The workshop on early childhood music education was an enlightening experience that highlighted the importance of music in the lives of preschool children and teachers. Ms Saaskia Rao’s expertise and practical insights provided valuable guidance on incorporating music into the classroom. In conclusion, the workshop equipped participants with the knowledge and tools to enhance their teaching practices and create a vibrant and engaging learning environment through the power of music.
