Teacher workshop on microscale chemistry

A workshop for teachers on microscale chemistry for was conducted at Maharaja Agrasen Model School, Pitampura, on 27 April, 2018. It was attended by 2 teachers of our chemistry department, Dr. Smriti Singh and Ms. Nausheen Wasi.

The workshop focused on the demonstration of microscale apparatus in chemistry labs and was followed by a hands-on session. It was attended by over 60 teachers of NPSC schools.

Dr. Pratibha Kohli, Principal, Maharaja Agrasen Model School, warmly welcomed participants at the workshop. The key note speaker for the event was Mr. Suraj Prakash, Life Member, National Progressive Schools' Conference. He discussed the advantages of using microscale apparatus instead of a traditional setup with the aim of making chemistry labs safe and economical.

The advantages of Student Environment and Teacher-friendly (SEAT) lab was emphasised by Dr. H. O. Gupta, Head of Workshop Department, NCERT, who demonstrated microscale experiments for the secondary level.

The talk was followed by a demonstration in the chemistry lab of alternatives methods available to the traditional experimental methods prevalent in most schools today. These environment friendly and innovative approaches can be used to minimise the wastage of resources.

The post-lunch session was conducted by Dr. K. K. Arora, Associate Professor, Zakir Husain College, University of Delhi. He highlighted organic chemistry experiments using microscale apparatus. It was accentuated that a usage of microscale apparatus does not, in any way, deviate from the standard C.B.S.E. curriculum.

The informative session concluded with a power point presentation on Green Chemistry by Dr. Pratibha Kohli. She emphasised on green chemistry rather than environmental chemistry, as preventive measures practiced today will benefit the environment in the long run.

We look forward to implementing the same at our School to make the world a better and safer place to live in.
