The Indian School and Hindustan Times jointly held a workshop on Design thinking for classes X to XII on 10 and11 May, 2021. The session aimed to guide the young learners on how design can empower the individual's decision-making process.
Workshop mentor, Mr Sunil Sangra, former consultant to the World Bank, the Aditya Birla Group among others, has co-designed and facilitated design thinking workshops for the Harvard Business School and conducted over 200 workshops in design thinking and innovation in India and abroad.
The two-day workshop covered a detailed study on design mindset, methods and phases of design thinking, on techniques for Ideation.
The students participated in a challenge based upon the Sustainable Development Goals and the theme - Foodball. The participating teams were to conceptualise a solution to the increasing problem of junk food consumption and the lack of exercise among young children.
The enthusiastic contestants came up with fresh and innovative ideas on the topic. In fact, the challenge received a plethora of ideas. From apps which determine the nutrient value of food and ways to provide nutritious food to young children in collaboration with schools and play schools, the young contestants gave it their all.
Our talented team of Ekveer Sahoo, Hardik Narang and Manan Kakkar of class 10 designed a prototype of an app based on adding gamification to the problems. The novel app that they built, analyses the types of exercises done by users. They also built a push-up counter which operates via camera, using machine vision. For junk food, they designed a food identifier using a custom Microsoft Image Recognition API. These features enabled them to identify what users would consume, with the help of the calorie database by EatingWell Inc. The app collects data from its users and converts it to points. The top three names on the leaderboard are to be named winners and would receive cash prizes accrued from the advertisements in the app!
Mr Sangra was most impressed by the young innovators' ingenuity and creativity. The team of Ekveer, Hardik, and Manan won the challenge bagging the First Position most decisively!
It was a workshop that was both educative and thought-provoking.Students enjoyed and gained much from it.
