Top honours at the 12th AWIM National Olympics- Where fun meets Challenge

The Indianite winners of the AWIM Skimmer Regional Olympics, held in almost 40 cities in November, yet again showcased their prowess at the 12th edition of the AWIM National Olympics at Vel Tech University in Chennai on 21 and 22 December 2019.

The Indian School team comprising of four competent students of class V, namely, Hargun Kaur, Azfar Ali, Unnabh Dasmahapatra and Nawal Meena were accompanied by their teacher, Ms Parvinder Kaur. They put forth their best effort into the face-off which saw the convergence of thirty-four regional winners of AWIM to select the numero uno at the national level.

A World in Motion (AWIM) is an international event organised by the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE, India) which aims to promote effective learning and understanding of science, technology and mathematics among young students. The main objective of the event is to encourage young minds for a possible future career in the field of engineering. The competition is supported by Maruti Udyog Limited.

Hargun Kaur of V-B enthralled the audience with her graceful Kathak performance at the grand inaugural function. She received a cash prize of Rs 1,000 for being a part of the cultural programme.

The theme for the two-day national event was Shaping Future Mobility. In this round, the young participants made paper sailboats that were propelled by fans across the floor. They had to test the effects of different sail shapes, sizes, and construction methods on the performance of their skimmers. The goal of this challenge was to design a set of skimmers to meet specific performance criteria. Friction, force, and effect of surface area were some of the physical phenomena encountered by students in this challenging round.

The Skimmers that were skilfully built for the competition underwent a series of track rounds maximum distance, maximum speed, turnability, accuracy and weight carrying capacity and were tested on land using a fan. Each team made a brilliant presentation of its innovation along with a chart showing the design, logo, slogan and the salient features of the concept toy.

The Indianite team did the School proud by winning the award for Best Team Work.

The spectacular performances by the participants at the Valedictory Ceremony brought the mega event to a close.

The active involvement of the host universitys volunteers in training the nascent innovators made the entire experience all the more intriguing and experiential.
