UN competition on Childrens Day

The United Nations in India in collaboration with UNICEF and UNEP held a painting and slogan competition for school students on the occasion of Childrens Day on 14 November, 2018. The exercise helps bolster the efforts towards the realisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The theme for this years painting and slogan competition was BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION and the 12 winning slogans and paintings were incorporated in the annual UN-NPSC calendar. The UN House was bustling with energy with participants from over 80 Delhi-NCR schools. Students expressed their concern over the use of single use plastic through art.

Before starting the event the judges spoke on the harm of using single-use plastic. The Collins Dictionary has named single-use as the word of 2018. It reflects the increasing global awareness on environmental issues. The term refers to products that are often made of plastic and used just once, only to be thrown away immediately, rendering them unsustainable and harmful to the planet. Images of plastic adrift in the distant oceans- items such as straws, bottles and bags, have given rise to numerous campaigns to reduce their use.

Every participating school could register only a single entry for the competitions and they made sure that their best talent participated! Though the level of competition was high, Simran Khandpur of class X-A participated in both the events and successfully took a prize for slogan writing.
