Visit to Open House , IIT Delhi

On 20 April, 2013, 50 students of classes XI & XII, bustling with experiment, boarded the school bus alongwith 3 teachers for IIT Delhi. The occasion was Open House,' 13, the opportunity for visitors to glimpse novel experiments and exhibits of an exclusive student group from amongst the countrys brightest minds .

Our students were divided into 2 groups, medical and non-medical, each group visiting laboratories of their own interests . I, being in the non-medical group got an opportunity to visit the chemistry lab to see glass- blowing, computer science as well as fiber-optics labs . While some experiments were a trifle complicated to comprehend at our level, the rest were a delight! The demonstration of glass blowing left us in great awe. We watched in disbelief the precision achieved as glass test tubes were produced before us. Similarly, the fiber optics lab was an equally enriching experience. We fathomed firsthand how communication happens over the internet. The chemistry lab which had demonstrations of jumping Sodium and Elephant toothpaste fascinated us as phenomena. The computer science lab exhibited experiments being performed ' virtually' ,on the computer. After a long and utterly enlightening day we returned to School, our minds still teeming with questions of why, what and how on all that we saw. We decided to preserve their resolutions for sessions with our own dear teachers in our classrooms! Filed by Arpita Saggar, XI-A On 20 April, 2013, along with 3 teachers 50 students of science had the privilege to visit IIT Delhi. An annual Open House gave us the opportunity to explore, enjoy and experience the wonderful world of Science there. Excitement was killing us, and it took us about half an hour to reach. We were all brimming with anticipation and joy and ' entering IIT' was enough to inspire us for a start! It was impossible for us to explore the entire 320 acre campus and so, we were divided into 2 groups; one of which was the Biology students, who were interested more in the field of medicine. The other group was of the students interested in engineering, computer science etc. Being a part of the Biology group, we were taken to the Biomedical Engineering section, which included Biomechanics, Biotechnology, animal experimentation etc. We were shown a robot which can be used for surgical purposes. It can be controlled by a surgeon in one country and the robot actually carries out the surgery in another! We were also told about how research is taking place to find a cure for cancer. Various techniques at the level of nano particles are being used to find a cure for this monstrous disease. There was so much more to see that explaining each one here is not possible! So I would conclude by saying that this experience has been imprinted on our memories forever. We express our gratitude to our teachers who gave us this opportunity. It was indeed an amazing learning experience. Filed by Meghlayana Banerjee, XI A.
