Visit to the India International Science Festival for class 9

On 7th December 2016, the children of class IX were taken to the National Physical Laboratory to attend the India International Science Festival. The festival had a range of interesting exhibits as well as live demonstrations. It was divided into sections, namely bio-technology, environment, defense and astronomy.

We were exposed to many different demonstrations in these sections. We learned how to make our own DNA samples at home.we were told that all we need to do is to mix detergent, salt and deodorant with our own saliva to get a DNA sample!

We were shown a seismograph, which is an instrument for measuring the magnitude of an earthquake- what it looks like and how it works. The satellites in the astronomy department and naval weapons in the defence department were exceptional models to observe. A well-designed model on climate change explained the whole process in an extremely clear and interesting manner. Learning about the age of a tree and how it is calculated was fun. The number of rings on the bark of a cylindrical piece of tree gives its age. Also, the same cylindrical piece can be used to compare rainfall in two particular years from the thickness of these rings!

Essentially, from the exhibits surrounding us, we saw and learnt that science is and can be used in each and every field and aspect of life. It was an utterly enriching session.
