"What is Mathematics?", by Balkrishna Shetty, a Book Release.

On 17 September, 2013, the National Book Trust released the book What is Mathematics? by Balkrishna Shetty, an IFS officer, at the India International Centre. The occasion was presided over by Retd. Ambassador K.P. Fabian. Our teacher, Ms. Sandhya Batheja represented our School.

The function was graced by Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Pallam Raju, who released the book. Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi and Prof. Parvin Kiran Sinclair, Director, NCERT were guests of honour.

Prof. Dinesh Singh, in his speech, expressed concern about the need for producing more mathematicians of the eminence of S. Ramanujan. This is critical, he said, because India has a rich heritage of mathematicians but unfortunately, we do not have as many in recent times. The Indian youth needs to restore the glory of Indian mathematics, he entreated. An inspiration from the life of Ramanujan should replace the phobia for maths in the new generation which must be motivated to pursue higher studies in mathematics.

It was felt that the new book will help 'clear the air', as it were, about the subject and Is expected to reach out to all. Numerous complex concepts have been simplified and articulated for easy understanding. According to Prof. Sinclair the book is an interesting read for all ages, especially children.
