What to expect at NASA-Dr. Gautam Shroff An intro for students going on School excursion to the US May, 2014.

"Success is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of knowledge, a way of sceptically interrogating the universe." On the sunny Saturday morning of 17 May, 2014., Dr. Gautam Shroff , Vice President and Chief Scientist, TCS gave us his valuable time for an interactive session. He spoke on NASA which is the highlight of our trip to the US this summer. Dr. Shroff shared with us, his experience at NASA in California, as a student. He recalled in amusement how he innocently followed his professor there, as a summer intern! Dr. Shroff spoke of the birth of NASA when John Kennedy made a historic promise to the world , in the early sixties to place a man on the moon before the decade was out! And thus the rush of research sprung out at this institution to make Kennedy's commitment come true! He told us about the various space shuttles that have made the mark or failed there. How NASA was motivated to make space exploration happen even though, at the time, the vision of its utility for mankind wasn't clear. Dr. Shroff talked about various things we could look forward to at NASA. He said that whilst space science hadn't always attracted despite a summer-stint at ISRO, the subject is a fascinating one. He ended by saying he hoped we would also drop in at Disney! Mehar Kaur, XI A
