Workshop for Mathematics and Science teachers by Prof. Hukam Singh of NCERT.

A workshop for Mathematics and Science teachers was conducted on 15 December, 2012. Professor Dr. Hukum Singh, Head of Department for Mathematics and Science, NCERT was our eminent resource person. The main theme of the workshop was "Teaching and Learning of mathematics and science using activities."

The session began with a discussion on the basic recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework, 2005. Key points were highlighted; for example, the need to connect knowledge learnt at School to that learnt outside, the shift from rote methods to logical thinking, the changing system of examinations making it more compatible with classroom learning and most importantly the need to believe in the capabilities of the child fully.

The discussion then progressed to become subject- specific, with examples from daily life. Common conceptual errors made by students were also emphasised as was the necessity of the teacher to deal with them skilfully.

Talking about Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, stress was laid on giving teachers more rigorous training to help in it's expedient and complete implementation.

The second sessionhands was a hands'-on exercise. Prof. Singh demonstrated various simple, yet effective models to build a thorough understanding of manifold mathematical concepts. He recommended the use of such tools for students, not only to instil an interest in the subject but also to make them excel.

The session was enlightening and immensely interactive; the group retired for the day refreshed in their special subject!
