Workshop on Empowering the Mathematics Teacher: Innovative Practises to Enliven the Mathematics' classroom
A two-day workshop was organised by the Ramanujan Foundation for initiatives in mathematics education, in collaboration with the Ramanujan Mathematical Society and the Asim Premji University at Sanskriti School on October 9th and 10th 2015.
Senior teachers Alka Kanwar and Mini Bhadran attended the workshop. The two-day session focused on: -
Enhancing the mathematical content/ knowledge of teachers.
Mathematical exploration through hands-on activities.
Explorations and innovative practises in the teaching and learning of the subject, including problem-solving.
Highlights of the workshop.
Lectures on topics of mathematics relating to secondary and senior secondary school mathematics.

Technology sessions on open source software which highlight important mathematical concepts which can be integrated in the classroom.
Discussion on articles from At Right Angles involving a historical perspective of mathematics.
Sessions on applications of mathematics like tessellations.
Problem-solving exercises which excite the mathematical curiosity of the students.
Eminent persons with contributions to mathematics education in India like Dr. Jonaki B Ghosh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Elementary Education, Lady Shriram College, Dr. Haneet Gandhi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education, Ms. Sageetha Gulati, Head of Mathematics Department at Sanskriti School and Dr. Antar Bandyopadhayay, Associate Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, delivered lectures on various topics.
The two-day workshop was truly an experience for us. We learnt that technology can greatly aid the process of mathematical explanation. The potential of Geogebra can be exploited to make school mathematics enjoyable and meaningful.
